Good idea. I'll take a piece from the inside and see if I can get it going on agar and cardboard.

You can do stem butts to cardboard, or mulch, sawdust, chips etc, I hear subs even like pine needles🤷🏼♂️. I would recommend stepping it up, starting with a small container like a ziplock sandwich bag, then to a shoebox and building it up as it colonizes.

Also, I have decided to add another casing on top of my patch - some of the myceliated chips are exposed on top, and I'd like them to have a little bit more cover. I want something even, but not super chunky - what does everyone reccomend?
Secondly, is there any kind of "food" I can give the mushroom patch to break down and eat and grow on?
Thanks for being patient and answering my questions in advance, I'm a total noob at growing outdoor patches or woodlovers!
They are ps ovoids. The areas I cased with a mix of verm, coir, and peat moss and planted grass seed are doing better than bare mulch (had a bunch abort) and cased with no grass seed.

Ps allenii from stem butts to small alder chips from October 2020, transferred to outdoor beds in April 2021, with bigger alder chunks covered in some older maple leaves... Mycelium has taken to the outdoor beds pretty well and is colonizing.
This what remains of the first transfer from stem butts, held aside to distribute around various local wood chip piles 🤫

Looking nice. I made a decent sized Allenii patch, I'm impressed with how fast it moves. On the surface it didn't look like much was happening but when I peeled back the surface it was everywhere.

Fuzzy feet developing Love how azures do that.

Was gifted a baggy full of dried allenii chips that were super colonized. Had my doubts about how well it would rehydrate but I put one into a egg carton sandwich and then the rest into a makeshift water bottle tray with some random potting soil from another planter. I’m super happy with how well it’s reestablishing!

I suppose so, although usually they have somewhat of a casing layer in the wild right? I saw your recent tek though by accidentally letting a chunk dry out and getting azzie fruits after dunking and putting it into the wine cooler. Super awesome, I need to cop me one of those and start experimenting. Nice work mate🤙

Just ordered 15kg Alder wood chips to start some wavy caps. Been reading about the use of sawdust. Is it better to use it? Should I spawn from grain to sawdust to wood chips instead of layering grains with chips? Is it just the animals that’s the problem or are there other benefits?I have oak HWFP wondering if this would work.

It’s best to to do grain to sawdust blocks to chips, faster for making bulk. If the chips have a good mix of fines they should be good. Alder isn’t necessary, it might not even be the best, just about any hardwood and some conifer woods work. Alder is good it’s just the main hardwood crop in the northwest where some of the older writeups come from so it was the most available wood. You can Just use what’s around you from sawmills or tree services

Alright thanks for that dude. Someone said I should soak the chips for a week to a month? Correct? And anything else I need to know? What’s the best way to soak? Guessing I’ll need to weigh down with something..

That being said, I have also had fantastic results spawning grain direct to outside beds of chips. The only downside was rodents fucking around in the chip beds looking for seed. Next time I do it will probably be with sawdust/wood pellet tek.

I legit only soak for maybe 12-24h. It all depends on the size of course but you don't want to use massive chunks. The mycelium will generally colonize the surface initially and bore it's way thru the wood over time. Even 3 year old colonized chips in my patch, they just became lighter and really easy to break. They digest the lignin and leave the cellulose IIRC.
The wood chips will ferment after a few days, I've never experimented with that, but a month is too much. That would smell rancid af.
