Can anyone describe the smell of P. ovoideocystidiata mycelium on wood chips? I spawned wheat to it and it's colonizing (not too aggressively but it's going) but lately I've been feeling this pleasant sweet smell, sweeter than a jar of colonized cubes, like a mixture of esters. I don't see any contamination but I'm afraid there might be yeasts producing that, I'm not sure if P. ovoids produce that sort of smell.

I would definitely describe it as sweeter smelling than cube myc. Smells amazing actually. When I rehydrate my tubs I linger for a minute and catch a whiff. Nothing I'd conflate with yeast though. Smells like something that, by smell, I would blindly guess would be edible and delicious.

Yep. Same deal. Not picky eaters either as far as wood types. Reminds me... I have a box I need to expand to a 64qt of chips because it ate 3casing layers and won't fruit so it's destined for THE GREAT WOODCHIP PILE IN THE GARDEN *echoes*

Exactly! Fruity and sweet, pretty much like something I'd eat. I guess it's fine then. Thank you.

Ok, took pics of new plates today:
Subaeruginosa:

Ovoids:

No luck with P.alenii, agar gets slimy whitish spots (bacterial?) right on the next day, so I tossed it, I've made 3 or 4 attempts and the result is consistent. Seem I either contaminated that syringe, or the print initially had something in it already. Also, P.alenii print was dated 2017, so I guess it's old. Any tips on it?
Here is the whole collection, together with some P.semilanceata and Pan Cyans:

I've got these PP5 containers from IKEA and they work great, except that the lid is a bit matte, but there is enough visibility from the sides.

Hey wxorx, i bought those same IKEA containers. Are you modifying the lid at all or just pressure cooking as is?
Btw, here is T1 from wild Subaeruginosa spore prints I collected last year. Extremely vigorous stuff.

Wow, really looks nasty aggressive I don't mod them in any way, just use them as they are. Stack them in three on top, wrap in foil and PC, works great.

Is there any consensus on which substrates or mixes the wood lovers like best or does it vary by species/variety? From everything I've read in this thread and others, it seems like any hard wood chips, fresh or rehydrated, work equally well, and without need for supplementation of things like bran, gypsum, etc. Would that be an accurate assessment?

Hindsight, woodloving psilocybes? Spores to Agar to grain to saw dust to wood chips. Most hardwood chips seem to be suitable, lots of write ups about alder, but that may be because alder is the main hardwood in the northwest. I’m sure aspens and Cotten woods would get devoured, but all your maples and red and white oaks should work fine. Pines and other conifers are probably least preferred but they do seem to grow on them, I’ve seen cyanescens growing on cedar garden beds, not that it was vigorous growth on it, but some just believe that it won’t grow on cedar. Some spruces seem fine, and long as they aren’t rot resistant woods. Lots of bagged mulches work really well, Lowe’s had some generic brown mulch that worked good for me, and Scott’s nature scapes seems like a good one, however they make that stuff based on what’s available to their local plants and it can vary by region and season so if you go that round get a test bag before you buy a pallet of it. Tree care /arborists are a great resource as a lot of the time they need to pay to dump chips at a yard waste facility and are happy to dump them for free if they have jobs in Your area. Also sawmills, you can usually purchase sawdust or chips by the loader scoop, or even buy it by the 100 yard van. The best substrates are what’s available. Let me find the link to these hardwood bricks that Nate dog found. They seem about perfect. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27221244#27221244

Thanks Land Trout. Yes mostly asking here about Psilocybes though I am growing gourmets too but have definitely seen through weeks of research that they need more supplementation (at least the trickier varieties). Thanks for the chip info and link - very helpful. Glad to know I can just use pure wood substrate without having to supplement it (beyond the nutrition the grain spawn provides in the beginning). I have Azures and Cyans growing on agar now so wanting to ensure I get the right substrates ready. Going to try growing both of them indoors (in a big wine cooler I just bought) and outdoors but have read a lot on the indoor difficulty so the indoor part will just be a fun experiment. If I have any success with it I’ll post some pics.

good luck with that baeo! I've found that I get fastest colonization with a regular 0,4% ME liquid culture. like ten times faster than agar to grains. However, it's still fucking slow.
about that mulch I was using.

these are sterilized substrate bags inoculated with subaeruginosa and ovoideocystidiata on friday. They appear to like it. I'm pretty sure I'll get some bacterial contamination in there because I don't think I sterilized for long enough. Since they are going outdoors, it doesn't really matter much. as long as it gets a good hold on the substrate, I'll be happy!

Hi everyone I have a question, I have a jar of Psilocybe Cyanescens on rye berries that got contaminated. The mycelium seemed to eat the contam for a while but now it stopped expanding and left a few green spots. Is it worth it to mix those grains with some soaked woodchips ?
Also I got a big box of wood chips from a friend but they are quite big and there are lots of gaps between the chips. Would that lead to them losing moisture faster ?
EDIT: Anyone tried supplementing wood with spent mate leaves ? I tired it but i can't really figure out if the mycelium benefits from it or not. I was wondering if maybe someone else had given it a go.

You could sure try it, and I bet the myc will leap onto the wood. I had a moldy grain jar that I threw in my compost heap, and I still see a growing lump of myc when I turn it. I’d say the finer the wood for grain to wood the better. Don’t know if the mate leaves would help out at all, probably won’t hurt. These wood lovers are pretty hardy.

Thanks Land Trout ! I guess I'll dig through my woodchips and get the smaller ones. Would hate to see all that mycelium getting wasted, worst case scenario I'll just throw it in the compost as you said.

Here's a Ps. Cyan shoebox with pasteurized mulch and woodchips.

I introduced 1 qt of spawn comprised of papercrate, rye, and sawdust 5 days ago. When this is colonized I'll add more until it's full, then once it's done I'll use this box as spawn for a full size tub that will go on my porch. That tub will get a good soil casing layer with grass and moss planted in it for a nice living micro-climate.

Throwing this contaminated mixture of azzie grains and chips into a nice bag full of fresh alder sawdust. Shall see what becomes of it ...I have a feeling it will beat the contams and colonize fully🙏
