I figured, I dunno where it went sideways though. My grains were good I even have a control jar on the shelf, still showing no signs if contam. So it must be my bulk sub, right? Could you advise another prep method?

Hey guys, I have a few questions that I haven't been able to find answers for going back through this thread:
1. I see that people are using unpasteurized substrate, does that mean you are only soaking in cold water to get to field capacity?
2. Has anyone managed to get an outdoor patch to fruit the same year as creating it? I understand that if you are spreading a small amount of spawn to a large bed, then it will take a long time to colonise but theoretically, if you used a large amount of spawn to a small amount of woodchips, could it fruit in one season?
3. How does regular old "Master's Mix" go for woodlovers? I can access pre-sterilised commercial bags reasonably cheaply.

I'll answer question #2:
Most of my projects this year were consolidated blocks(built up during spring) that were buried in August w/ some fresh/fermented woodchips added around the sides and top. First flushes came in about 3 months later.

My answer to question 1 is, I used hot water hydrate pellets, but now I have a trailer load of sawdust in my yard. I just wasnβt going to consider pouring boiling water on them a true pasteurization.

Have any of you guys ever noticed a Bleach-like smell to damaged Azzy mycelium? My culture AZ2 on sawdust smells like this since I took a piece from it to make a patch yesterday. The smell is very fruity (typical for Azzies), but there's an obvious hint of Bleach to it. It only started giving off scent after being damaged.
Maybe that's how they're so successful? Sterilizing their substrates with their own biological bleach?

I get the sweet smell but not bleach. I broke up some spawn earlier today and didn't notice it. And since we're bragging about our projects...

First pic is a selection of Subaeruginosa and Semilanceata substrates inoculated with Liquid culture. the other bags are Azurescens inoculated with spawn. I've noticed growth on the subs but nothing yet on the semi.
Second pic is my baeocystis substrates inoculated with spawn. ever so slowly.... Then I have 1L of ovoid LC almost ready to use Also have 150L if Allenii chips pretty much ready to go.
Life is good guys
(except for that Hoogshagenii print that won't germinate and my weak Pan mycelium )

Hmm maybe this culture is somehow special and prodces insanely unnatural hypochlorite levels? It also tends to bruise massively. Or maybe it's somehow related to Copper supplementation in my case. I guess time will tell.

@Haywire
Sorry if I am wrong but reading your last few posts it sounds like you are treating the semilanceata the same as your wood lovers, are you putting the semis to wood chips?
Just wondering.
I have inoculated mixed aged wood chips from my last pruning session and fresh pine chips from landscaping supplies with some sub grain spawn. The aged ones are doing better but the fresh chips aren't looking too shabby either.
aged mixed chips vs. fresh pine chips

hoping to see some fruiting from the aged bed in the coming season.

Haywire I am kind of curious what you're running for your semi sub as well. Taking semi to grain tomorrow and very interested in everyone else's attempts.

That's funny AF. Are those supplemented/sterilized? You might get some growth. Never know... Excited to watch your baeo progress regardless.

goddammit, the stupid still lingers. Ok, so they're hydrated softwood pellets with crushed corncob, rye and gypsum. it's sterilized yes. actually, I am seeing growth on the semilanceata bags. so the joke's on you guys I just discovered something, hahahaha.
about the baeo, they annoy me so much. they're putting my patience to the test. so terribly slow on grain and then I expected better growth on sawdust but it's not happening. I'm going to try some pine pellets next... In a month or two... when the spawn is ready.
Ovoids are next...
