Hello again. I'm not trying to be annoying or anything, just excited to have finally joined this awesome community.

I feel like I really only have two questions now.

1. How far do you try to isolate woodlovers, particularly Ovoids, before putting them to grain and beginning the expansion process?

2. How well do the bagged "hard wood" mulches work that you find in the many big box stores in the US?

Thanks!

Ovoids are easy and eat just about anything.  I just spread stem butts around and the do it all themselves

You don't need to isolate a lot of times.
Just get it enough clean for the grains and go make multiple jars.
You can see some voids in my gallery!

For me woodlover mushrooms are far more easy to cultivate.

Hey goys I am looking to get into ovoids (also looking for spores in EU right now) and found several threads of people having trouble germinating them, seemingly even more threads than with other types like cyans. Whats your experience with this, and your impression, does this occur more with ovoids? Should I try a different strain then, for starters with woodlovers?

I actually have a azur agar (but no wood) "slant" type thingy a friend gave my which I put onto agar, and after two weeks there is no growth so I fear its dead. I fear maybe it was a bit too dried out (it looked a bit like that) and maybe I should have hydrated it, or I hear a lot about constant warm temps here at least for spores, but I dont know if that applies to maybe too old myc too.

Ovoids are definitely the most aggressive and versatile woodloving psilocybe. You shouldnt have a problem getting spores to take on WBS or other grains. You can also go the agar route.

If the print/prints are fresh you shouldn't have a problem.
I only had problems with prints above 2-3 years old...

I'll second the prints needing to be fresh requirement. I used up an entire Azure print and ovoid print over the past couple years in various agar mixes, temperatures, lc's, and straight grain without ANY germination(or contamination for that matter...) Recently though, I acquired two Ovoid prints that were collected this 2020 season in the spring and I got 100% germination on every plate. At least in my limited experience, and with Ovoids, fresher worked way better.

Anyone remembers my Azzies that fruited in June last year? This year I wasn't disappointed either. More info in journal.

And just a regular plate.

Noice.  Wish I could get my '09 azzy print to germ.  I have everything from cyans to quebecensis going like gangbusters but it's the only print in 20 years I haven't been able to germ yet.  Even got decade old gym gill tissue to throw myc but no love yet with the old azzy print despite soft agar, Ms in brf, pressure hydrating spores, using flour pucks...  Soon enough though.  I'll crack that code.  Think it'll end up being the ol Ms to brf cake to SAB to pluck myc to put to agar trick.  I digress.  Cross posted and boring I'm sure but wanted to share a shot of one of my T5 quebecensis plates.  They're just now getting clean enough for grain the same day (yesterday) that I spawned my Ms/brf and sawdust jars to their outdoor home (and a couple shoeboxes). . Now I have a cyan, ovoid, quebecensis, and gym outdoor patch and all of the above on agar.  Me so happy.  Can't wait to get my azzy game up to Adas's level.

You made me laugh bro, my level is nowhere near where it needs to be. Thanks for the compliment anyway! I will have large Azzy harvests.. eventually! Working on it. Then I will obviously also share prints with the community.

Also, last year I thought that their June fruiting was triggered by starvation, but this year I fed them some grain spawn (same culture), just because I had some left over and needed to dump it somewhere. You can see it in the pic, some of it caught Penicillium but I'm sure it managed to provide enough nutrients that the myc no longer felt starved. It must be the microenvironment then.

And obviously, there was material above them (a piece of wood with some soil and sawdust), but I picked that out for the shot. I will be remaking the pot anyway since it's overdue.

Should clone it. What’s the temp where you are right now? Maybe you have a heat tolerant azur strain on your hands

I think they can tolerate up to 24°C, last year they aborted when the temps hit 28°C, similar this year.

I don't have to clone them, since I think I've had a monoculture for a long time already. I think it's just the environment in that flowerpot. In no other flowerpot do I have a lot of soil at the bottom. And they seem to love to pin at the pot-soil interface. I must work on my microenvironments, it seems.
