I'm hoping to start a perennial ovoid patch at my house since it's the only wood lover that can potentially tolerate my zone. Been researching ovoids recently and found that they grow near streams/bodies of water and Japanese knotweed and there's a early spring/ late fall fruiting period. It's just rained a bit and there's Japanese knotweed and a stream in my neighborhood. Figure in a few days I'll roll up a j and have a poke around in hopes of getting some spores.

What zone? Generally most woodlovers I've found to be very hardy. I get winters down to -20F and all the woodies do just fine outside year after year. Some years the freeze happens too early for the fall fruiters so fruits don't happen but the beds survive just fine and fruit nicely in years that are tolerable. Cyans coming up in the yard right now.

Ovoids are every year in june.

It's between 5 & 6. Some years it apparently gets crazy cold, my friend had one where it was -50F with wind-chill, though on record it was -30F. I'm lookin out for ovoids since I thought it was the only one that could tolerate this place year after year but I'd love to bring in other species if they can hang!

 Thanks LT.

For anyone wondering, regular agar recipe ~2% DME 3% agar

Compared to cubes, the myc is obviously very similar but I think I notice that it grows a little more erratically or squiggly, like it's had a couple shots of espresso.

Had to do this recently. After a day or two of contemplation I believe I pinpointed my issues and am guardedly hopeful of my current projects.

Speaking of ovoids, I felt silly and took a section of this germ plate and put it to grain before I left town. My contam rate thru inoculation has been pretty low of late (~1/15, maybe less) so figured why not. (The iffy spots on the plate are sediment)

Very cool to see the indoor version, the grey/green of the cap with the white rim is awesome. I got some on grain and am excited for the possibilities

I was talking to a river-rat buddy of mine about ovoids, and he's pretty sure he's seen them here in western Indiana. Have they been reported this far west yet? Also, what are their seasons?

Spring thru fall. The best time to look is when the lows have risen into the 50s for a while and then a nice rain occurs. Found commonly near Japanese knotweed and box alder. If you know where a patch is you can probably find it flushing all the way to November. I think there was a find in ATL this past December in the ovoid hunting thread.

It's thought that Ovoids have rapidly widened their range in the US as it does very well along streams/rivers, colonizing loose wood debris, and then traveling down and around the river when it floods.

Did you mean Alder or Boxelder? Doesn't really matter because we don't really have either here. Or the knotweed. Just talked to him again and he explained they were in a sandy flood zone near creeks coming off the west fork of the White River in SW Indiana, somewhere within the circle on the pic. Makes sense, since there are known sightings of Ovoids in eastern Indiana where both forks of the White River start.

Box elder. And there's some other trees the mush hunters have associated with ovoids, including beech I think. I looked at this seasons ovoid hunting thread and that guy in Georgia found some Jan 1 and another small patch two weeks ago.

I've run into my first problem with a wood lover. I spawned ovoid grain to mulch and coir in a shoebox and after a slow start the myc has really started to assert itself. However, I found one chip in the tub with slime mold on it. How to proceed?

Yeah I tried cold shocking gnats when it was around 30-40°F and they just went into stasis and seemed to multiply faster when I brought them in afterwards.

The ovoid grains to unprocessed mulch is doing alrite so far

It looks a lot different on agar; pretty puffy, moreso than the ATL7 I have, and makes sort of blue/green antlers.

Same as cubes, 2% DME 3% agar and ~0.5% yeast. I've thought about using the water from boiled wood chips, I'll try it sometime.

I started drying out the ovoid shoebox after I saw and removed the chip harboring slime mold, and the myc growth seems to have accelerated. It wasn't very wet to begin with but the culture seems to be happier now.

Yes, that's essentially what they are. I transferred an antler/finger to this plate, and it formed more than the previous one. Interesting that they all seem to occur around the same time of growth as they are mostly on the same concentric circle out from the transferred agar.

Roughed up the ovoid shoebox today and added some more unprocessed mulch. Had some plates I needed to get rid of so I just threw them in the big bag of mulch. Need to figure out where to make a patch outside soon. Think I'll also go around to some local parks and bury some colonized mulch in the landscaping.
