Good evening fine internet people! I think my timing is crappy. I started psilocybe Cyanescens spores on agar a couple months back, transferred a colonized wedge to a quart jar of rye which looks to be roughly 2/3 colonized. I’m planning on using the rye to inoculate a bag of sterilized wood-chips and then to an outdoor wood chip bed in my yard. I’m really not at all sure how long wood chips take to colonize but my guess is it be pretty late for spawning outside. I have no illusions about getting fruits this year. How cold is too cold to start a bed? I was also wondering if it would be possible to store a bag of colonized alder chips for a few months to then spawn outside in springtime? Please take easy on me. I’m an ignoramus but I mean well🤡

Thanks for the info Land Trout! I’m just guessing but it may be November ish before my wood chips are ready for the great outdoors. Kinda sounds like they might just be ok.

I’ll plant it and see I guess. It’s a pretty low risk gamble. I can all ways start again in January in anticipation of Spring weather.👍

I’m kind of a Luddite but I think I may have posted a picture. This is a Jar of Psilocybe Cyanescens mycelium on rye. This seems to have slowed down before reaching 100%. I was going to transfer this jar to jars of sterilized wood chips. Does Ps. Cyanescens usually take a while to colonize grain? This is 6 weeks. Any insight would he much appreciated! If the picture did not load, please disregard this messsge🤡

I too have been having the same problem with Azurescens. My Cyanescens germinated ( albeit slowly). The Ovid spores I got germinated in a few days and produced Mycelium I can only describe as “ aggressive “. I don’t have a ton of experience but the Ovid plates I started have been growing faster than any cubes I’ve done.

Does anyone use gypsum in their wood chip spawn? I’m thinking It probably wouldn’t hurt but figured I’d ask.😁

Thanks for the reply Mr. Piggy! I already added some to the soak water for a couple large spawn bags. I will skip it on the next batch and see what, if any difference is made.👍

Hey Land Trout, did you plant your sub spawn into soil? They don’t appear to be growing off of wood chips. Very cool. I hope to have some cool pictures to post myself next fall.

Hey Gogo! How old ( if you had to guess) are the chips you used? I may have to try some partially decomposed chips as well to get a side by side comparison.👍 To be honest so far I haven’t had a problem getting “ fresher” chips to colonize. However if it could be faster……

10 jars of Subaeruginosa spawn ready for wood chips. I’ve got a 3 day weekend which will be spent pc ing bags of alder chips. I know it’s pretty early but I’m pumped for springtime!

That’s Awesome Rumblestrip! What are your temps like? It seems like more and more folks are figuring out fruiting woodlovers indoors. Badass👍

My experience has these taking around 1 month to colonize a qt. Jar. Here is a picture of a jar inoculated on the 6th for reference.
