I live close to NYC. Is this region completely unsuitable for outdoors woodlovers cultivation? Where can I read some teks? Would like to try my hand at azures and/or cyans if possible.

Just got a Psilocybe Cyan print from a generous member here. Can anyone point me to a good tek for growing these outside? Are all woodlovers grown outdoors in the same manner?

So is it necessary to put sawdust in the spawn jar? Or are grains alone good enough?

Yea i thought you were supposed to spawn to woodchips rather than coir, but i cant find a concrete answer on whether wood should be part of the spawn.

The wood needs to be PCed as well then, no? Some threads I see people mentioning sterilization of the woodchips. Other threads dont mention it.

Thanks so much. As thats the easiest, simplest way of doing things I was hoping this was the case. Do the woodchips need to be prepared in any way? Pasteurized? Soaked? PCed?

Planning on doing the same. Agar to wbs to outdoor woodchips.

I try to make sure the grain spawn is really colonized before I put it outside, that might be why I have less issues than others with rodents, but some people do claim to have issues outdoors with grain spawn and rodents.  I generally DGAF as long as the myc makes the leap to the chips, they can spread it all they want.

Heh, squirrels tripping nuts.

Anyway, I'm lucky enough to live in a very wet part of NW Oregon and do not need to soak chips.  I spawn outside directly to untreated moist chips from grain spawn and do fine.  Some people like to make a big tub of spawn indoors using woodchips and then bury that or chunks of that in outdoor chips beds and they have great success.

A lot of this is going to come down to the particular climate of where you live.

I live in NY near the water. Its never dry here. Always humid. Not sure what that means for my climate or what the preferred method would be due to my location but Im not worried about any critters eating it. In my attempt to dose the world, I pour any old tubs/bad spawn jars outside to get the squirrels and birds tripping but nothing ever touches it.

Last question. Does the spawn to woodchip ratio matter? Sounds like woodlovers work differently than other commonly cultivated mushrooms. You can keep adding chips each year so I wouldnt imagine the ratio matters too much? Its more a matter of just getting them started on wood?

Can anyone speak to the potency of azurescens and psilocybe cyans? Are they similar? Is azurescens much more powerful? Id like to try growing azurescens at the same time as cyans if i can manage to find a print. Only place selling them online is horribly overpriced.

I thought it was the opposite, interesting.

Exactly! It was the same for me. Before I tried them I was under the impression that the general consensus was that Azurescens were the stronger ones. But with mine, the opposite is true.

Interesting. Wouldnt suprise me if this was a huge misconception all along. Theres probably so few people who have had the privilege of trying and comparing both that its gone unchallenged for so long.

Are woodlovers similar to pans, in that they prefer grain water agar to lma? This is my germ plate.

Maybe im just being impatient but the plate hasnt changed much the past 3 days and aside from taking a couple transfers to lma and gwa im unsure what to do from here. Theres just a bunch of nonexpanding dots.

A plate spreader allows you to put a couple drops of spore solution on your agar dish then spread them around. I asked because your entire plate looks covered.

I streaked with a qtip

Ok, help me wrap my brain around this, or is this just something that’s been repeated so people belive it? I have a hard time believing that pans prefer grain soak water vs. malt that comes from grain. People have done great with grain soak water.

I’ve never had a problem with malt for any species, they all seem to do fine on it. The only agars I don’t like are water  and woodsoak.
Aspect, give those time, take a look under a stereo scope if you have one.

Its from my own experience but I have seen several people mention the same.

(The darker GWA plates are mislabeled, theyre supposed to be 12-2 and 12-4, not 11-2 and 11-4)

Ive had probably hundreds of Pan plates stall and get this crusty look on LMA. Every single time. I spent the better part of a year trying to remedy it with no success until I read an obscure thread and decided to switch agar types. Doesnt happen on gwa. Never.

For us to figure it out we need your recipe. Preferably for both malt and GSW recipes. "Stalling" is usually one of two things, either not enough nutrient or too much.

Ive used everything from 0.5% to 2%.

Are woodlovers supposed to be slow on agar? I got cyans on 1.5% MEA and it feels like its taking forever and a day.
