karo viability
    #2453818 - 03/20/04 09:22 AM (20 years, 13 days ago)

I was just wondering when i should take my karo out of the incubation chamber? It's been in approximately 2 weeks now, and has shown very impressive growth but i think it has pretty much stalled out.

Should I take it out of the incubator and move it into the fridge yet?

And how long can karo last in the fridge?

yeah... good time to do it... shake for a couple seconds to introduce a little more oxygen to the innoculum

sometimes mold can look like liquid mycelium , 2 weeks is pretty fast for karo to be done gowing, the mold looks white and whispy but you can usually see a shade of black in it somewhere, would suck to shoot up all your jars with mold ; )

uh oh... now i'm worried i have mold. I do have little flecks of black floating around in there, but i was assuming that they were spores. I used like 6cc's of a dark syringe to make my karo (b/c i didn't have an extra empty syringe), and i was thinking that what i was seeing was just spores that hadn't mated or something.

does the myc usually keep growing until it takes up the whole jar? I've got quite a bit of what i thought was myc floating around, but it hasn't taken over the whole microwavable container or anything.

anyone have pics of this black mold contam in a karo jar?

black spots are bad, although one time cujo had a bottle of aussie karo w/ some black spots he assumed were contams...must've been something else though, as he knocked up some grain with it and the grain is fine...
if i can borrow my roomies camera i will get you a pic of a contamed karo jar. lemme see here...

yea if you could locate that pic, i'd really appreciate it.

Although I am probably going to just end up tossing it, as I don't really have any jars that I can afford to test on since I won't have access to a PC for again for a while...

I just made (about 4 or 5 weeks ago) two batches of karo, and i have some black spots too. It might just be bits of dirt or something, not a contam, because after the first week they started to grow myc, and haven't stopped for over a month. Really incredible to see those little white strands floating around in there sucking up that sugar huh? :mushroom2:

I?ve looked everywhere for good sequential pics of karo. I have 3 going right now, around 5 days old, and all I have is the equivalent of a white particulate cloud. I mean, no strings or strands at all, they just got cloudy. Is that what they should look like at this point? Anyone have a karo grow log?

sounds fine man you won't always see strings right away but a nice white particulate cloud is exactly what you want to see.

i hate to be the one to beg to differ...
but my dogs jars of karo have black spots in them, well...one does, one doesnt.
the three in the past have always had them, bunched up in the middle of white mycelium.
this, he attributed to, dark syringe. remember...not all spores dropped from a mushroom will germinate. this is a fact of nature as far as he knows. 3 full half-pints of karo later innoculated into countless jars and of those countless, a more countable 2-3 jars contaminated. a 3-5% contam rate best he can figure, +- 2%.

anyway, point being..you'll never know until you try. what could be black mold spores in your jars might just be ungerminated spores. or vice versa. im sorry that in your dogs case, it was mold. growth within a day in a jar is usually not mycelium. even from karo, 2-3 days for you to even see the faintest signs of growth is the normal.

in my personal opinion, i dont think your karo was to blame. something else was. if you've seen mycelium in jars enough, you can imagine what it'd look like suspended in water. milky/silky color of white, very pretty, sometimes strandy, sometimes clumped into a 'cloud'. and yes, possible black specks from ungerminated spores.

just some insight, wish it was more, hope it helps someone.
