Do they stink?
The Octopus stinkhorns I find around here look very similar to those.

Cheers Toxic - angryshrrom: 'Do they stink?' terribly, the evil brown/green slime reeks of rotting flesh, helps attract the flies though. Octopus stinkhorns - do you have any pictures of these, would be interested.

Awsome photos angry' thanx for sharing, they're certainly some of the strangest Fungi i've seen.
I'm not 100% but this species may also grow in Australia? possibly known as Anthurus spp? havn't seen it in the wild but would love to.
What material were they fruiting on in those pics? - Aseroe rubra develops from an egg-like sack also.
cheers.

Here's a Clathrus archeri I hatched from an egg collected from a woodchip bed

It was hatched overnight in a tupperware tub resting on some moist paper towels
I made a clone from some rhizomorphs attached to this egg, washed in dilute ethanol and H2O2 and placed on antibiotic agar. I have so far failed to get this species to form eggs and fruit indoors, but outdoor fuiting in the autumn on woodchip beds spawned with my culture is prolific.
p.s. I have a copy of Dring's World Monograph of the Clathraceae (the family that includes all these bizarre species) if anyone's interested. It has full descriptions and really good (pen and ink) illustrations of all the species, microscopic features etc. PM me for a copy
