I did not see this on the contamination page....
    #2466680 - 03/24/04 09:13 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello out there! I am was wondering if anyone has seen this before. I know that my sterilization has not been what it should be, and I have taken steps to drastically improve for my next batch. I am not curious as to why as this happened(I'm pretty sure it was contamination on my part during the innoculation)but as to what it is and how to prevent it from happening again. It is a black growth in my substrate that started just one day after innoculation on one batch and about 3 days on another. Both contaminations have taken out 90% of my jars each time. Please let me know what you think if you have any ideas at all. Thanks.....

What did you use as a substrate. Did you use grain? If so it may be Aspergillus sp. Also, does the contaminant move around kind of liek a powder when its moved? like millions of little spores? if so, it may be Doratomyces spp. (Black mold).

I used brown rice flour and vermiculite. It's doesn't seem to move around either. Thanks for replying!

Be very cautious with that stuff. If you want to reuse the jars, wear a mask when disposing them.
As ShroomInhaler said, it may be Aspergillus sp. This mold is almost impossible to fight and as you said the fault might be the inoculation procedure, so next time be more careful when doing it. Making a glove box is a good idea.
Anyway, check the contam faq and learn about this and other molds.
Welcome to the shroomery

Yeah, I am almost 100% sure it was a sterilization issue. I have had the jars soaking in a sink of water and germicidal bleach for almost 24 hours now. I have some plastic 1/2 pint jars on their way in the mail, do you think I should wait or will the formally infected jars be ok after the bleach/water soak? Thanks for your help guys.

I think you guys a were 100% on the mark. I read up on Aspergillus sp. and I also had a cotam of the same stuff but a diff color on an earlier batch. This one was a greenish brown and was very powdery. Also to touch up on my last post when removing the infected substrate I noticed a fine *smoke* (mold probably) rising from the trash can. Luckily I had just purchased a thing of dust masks!!!! Well, once again thanks for helping us noobies.

Sounds like you're taking the precautions. Here's one other tip for disposing of Aspergillus/Penicillium jars; Try to submerge them in a dilute bleach solution and slowly open the jars underwater. They don't need to be filled, but having a decent amount of solution in them will let you shake them up before disposing. Even plain water will be better than dumping the jars out 'dry', as the liquid catches much of the 'dust'. The plumes you see when you dump out a dry jar are just bajillions of mold spores. . .anything you can easily do to reduce it is a good idea. It can get on your clothes, in your hair, etc. and get tracked back into more sensitive fungal areas.
