Bad clutch?
    #24650638 - 09/21/17 11:21 PM (6 years, 4 months ago)

So my GF's son bought an old 93 Honda Accord 5 speed. Has like 250,000 miles. Somethings wrong with the clutch. It wont hold any pressure on the brake fluid it uses.

A mobile mechanic came over and looked at it and says he might need a new clutch. How much trouble is it to swap out the clutch? Would it be better to buy a cheap car thats automatic?

What does the clutch have to do with your brake fluid?

If the fluid wont hold pressure then you have a leak, right?  Is your clutch fluid low?

The common tell for a bad clutch is "slipping".  Y'know, where the RPMs go high but you dont get power since the pressure plate is slipping.  Changing a clutch is a pain in the ass.  It requires removing the transmission.  To get the transmission out somtimes requires removing an axle.  If you are comfortable pulling a transmission, a clutch job is easy.  Ive only done it once and wouldnt want to do it again.

The clutch uses brake fluid.

Yeah the whole tranny removal is daunting to say the least.

The problem is the clutch wont engage as there is no pressure on the (brake) fluid. Not sure why a defective clutch would do that thou.

i would have someone else take a look at it.

there are several things that could go wrong with the clutch system. with your description any of the possibilities could be faulty.

does the car move at all?

does the pedal have a high "release point"?

clutch fluid level/condition?

a lot of times the clutch gets blamed on the slave cylinder.. you can pull off the inspection place on the transmission and see if you see excessive clutch material in the housing.

i also suggest bleeding the system and then checking it before throwing money at it.

Yeah, they have another mechanic looking at it.

Whats interesting is they drove it 10 miles to the next city to the mechanics house, and the son said the clutch was better. Not good enough for constant driving, but the clutcb engaged pretty typically. So the bleeding gun tool did help. Maybe it is just air in the line.

But im curious how the air got there in the first place. Must be some tiny leak somewhere in the linr or something.

maybe it wasnt properly bled in the first place.  or maybe the clutch had just been replaced and they screwed it up while they are in there.

sometimes an internal leak is the master/slave cylinder can cause air leaks, even though a leak wouldnt be present on the out side.

Ah.  The only manual transmission I ever dealt with has a cable operated clutch.

Vacuum pumps are pretty handy, incidentally.

Right now, it has a new slave and master cylinder installed.

Currently being investigated by the mechanic. I will try get an update soon.

The clutch release mechanism uses the fluid, not the actual clutch.

That's not how it works. The fluid and the rest of the mechanism disengages the clutch. You could drain the fluid or even remove the mechanism entirely and your clutch would still be engaged (if the actual clutch is good).

It wouldn't. There are springs in the pressure plate which 'engage' the clutch. If your clutch slips either the friction disc is worn out or the pressure plate is bad.

Quote:

The friction disc probably expanded, as hot things do, allowing enough friction to make the clutch 'feel' better.
