Pinning colonized WBS without a casing
    #2464271 - 03/23/04 03:38 PM (20 years, 9 days ago)

Well, from scanning 'the mushroom cultivator' I'm led to believe you can pin colonized substrate without a casing. I know this isnt ideal, but lets say someone couldnt case it because of lack of supplies for a casing layer, and the jar is fully colonised.. What consequences should this person expect to deal with? Less overall yield? One flush? Will colonised grain start to pin invitro?

Has anyone ever pulled this off? Just curious. :yesnod:

No vermiculite is available in my area yet, and I dont really want to order from the net cause of the shipping costs. Actually, no vermiculite over winter is what inspired me to try WBS. I usually do a verm/peat mix. I'm gonna hit off some garden centers now and see if I can score some jiffy mix or something similiar. Any other casing options that dont involve straight verm.?

I was wondering about invitro pinning on grain substrate though cause their are some pictures in the mushroom cultivator that looks like they are growing rite out of a jar they took the top off of, and they're all growing upwards too. Looks pretty cool  :yesnod:

I think you could get away with casing with straight potting soil or pasteurised garden compost in a pinch. I tried using straight soil once; the results weren?t mind blowing but were acceptable.

Invitro growth is definitely possible for grain, although I have no idea how effective a method it is. Check out these pix of caffinated rye growing uncased invitro from the advanced forum

Humidity must be kept high in your fruiting chamber to compensate for the lack of moisture released by the casing layer. I saw some pic's of some real nice grows without casing material. Might want to dunk it also to add water to the substrate that would normally come from the casing layer. Good Luck!

screw verm, use coir.
its less messy, it holds LOTS of water, it changes color (to light brown ) as it dries out, so its easy to know if its too dry.
and its CHEAP as hell

coir is king!
