Birdseed too dry...
    #2464476 - 03/23/04 06:38 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Got some really dry innoculated birdseed here. Its beginning to colonize, but is extrememly slow. What could I do? Inject some sterile water into the jar?

try it out on one and let us know cause a friend has the same issue with a jar right now...

another idea which one could try... put it in a small tuppeware container..sealed...and make sure its real humid in there...maybe this could rehydrate it somewhat...

not sure about contams from the humid air though....

Or maybe just dump it in a cleaned out tupperware and add some clean water. I just dont want to mess with the myc that is currently growing.

How long has it been colonizing? If no more than 2 days, be patient

Hold your horses! A few days ago I thought the same thing about my jars. I saw colonization in 3 days but it seemed to be moving really slow. On about the fifth day,  WOW, it took off like a rocket. Seems like after the first shake they take off. I thought mine were too dry also but thankfully I didn't mess with them.  Today their 80% colonized. If the millet looks like its about to explode, they should have enough moisture in them,IMO.

patience grasshopper
let it run for 7-10 days more
if it doesnt make any huge increase, mix a new batch slight more moisture, and do a g2g transfer from the active culture.

This has happened to me, I get really dry millet. So PC up some water and shoot 20ml to each jar, roll the jars to even it out. Always best though to have the right moisture content.
