No. That's an old wives tale aka bullshit.

The only true way to know if something is safe is to make sure you identify it correctly. Which the two people above have done already.

I've never had the giant puffball, but I'm not a huge fan of the pear-shaped puffball (Lycoperdon pyriforme), but many consider them a delicacy. I've been seeing the giant ones everywhere, so maybe time to try them.

I've eaten piles of em, look in my gallery for some pics. I really like them. Slice them about 1/2" thick, season with salt and pepper, dip in egg wash and then panko bread crumbs and fry in butter (or duck fat if you have it). They're excellent.

There are literally hundreds of uses for these. And when you're out of ideas just dry it completely and grind it into a powder for an excellent umami mushroom seasoning for everything.

I think he referring to the Universal Edibility Test, which is not bullshit and pretty useful. With that said, its not really meant for casual mycological identification.
Quote:

UNIVERSAL EDIBILITY TEST

1 Separate the plant into its various parts—roots, stems, leaves, buds, and flowers. Focus on only one piece of the plant at a time.

2 Smell it. A strong, unpleasant odor is a bad sign.

3 Test for contact poisoning by placing a piece of the plant on your inner elbow or wrist for a few minutes. If your skin burns, itches, feels numb, or breaks out in a rash, don’t eat the plant.

4 If the plant passes the skin test, prepare a small portion the way you plan to eat it (boiling is always a good bet).

5 Before taking a bite, touch the plant to your lips to test for burning or itching. If there’s no reaction after 15 minutes, take a small bite, chew it, and hold it in your mouth for 15 minutes. If the plant tastes very bitter or soapy, spit it out.

6 If there’s no reaction in your mouth, swallow the bite and wait several hours. If there’s no ill effect, you can assume this part of the plant is edible. Repeat the test for other parts of the plant; some plants have both edible and inedible parts.

I'm pretty sure death cap Amanita would be fine on the edibility test and then kill you in three days or so- I would not trust it for mushrooms.

the toxin turns off RNA polymerase, so you might not notice anything until your liver turned to mush

I dont think rubbing a mushroom on your skin would prove anything unless you rub it your liver.

This test does not work for mushrooms. Amatoxins will kill you dead if you used this.

I understand what you're trying to say but I stand by what I typed.

I fully understand now. Thanks I appreciate the continued replies. They pretty much answered all my questions.

On another note I'm pretty sure I saw some of these "death cap Amanita" well. No where near the Puffball I found. In the town I work. They looked similar to a puffball but when I kicked them over I saw gills underneath.

I sliced the puffball into 1" slices and painted both sides with olive oil. Then I put them in toaster over till they were toasty. Then I covered them in Marinara sauce, onions, and cheese. Baked till cheese melted. They were delicious!

I will try this method with the rest

I will

I'd say that's 100% a giant puffball.
I've got a patch of common puffballs near me and I've been watching them for the last few days. Don't wanna eat them (yet) because I'm currently more interested in their life cycle than the taste for now.
Anyway I've been checking on them every day but today I saw some little scrotum has kicked them all over and stamped on them.

Some people just have no respect for nature.

Puffballs are one of my favorites....slice them like an eggplant and  just saute the slices in butter with salt and pepper and some garlic...They are delicious and yes, I am 100% certain that is a good puff ball...Calvatia gigantea.
