is pre-boiling popcorn necessary?
    #2464453 - 03/23/04 06:32 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

does popcorn not absorb adequate moisture during an 18-24 hour presoak? i ask because some birdseed teks call for a short pre-soak (12hour) and no pre-boil. instead of a pre-boil could a bit of water be added to the jar before PC? or is preboiling just a more precise way to guarantee proper moisture content?

also when simmering any grain, does it matter if the boiling pot is covered or not?

thanks

From my experience, WBS absorbs water much more readily than popcorn. I have never tried popcorn with soaking and not pre-boiling, but taking into account the fact that I usually simmer WBS for 10-20 mins and popcorn 40-60 mins, you can see what i mean about difference in uptake, so I would imagine that boiling is necessery for popcorn. That said, it might not be

i would boil. whats the harm in boiling anyway? just soak for 12-24 hours then boil. let cool, then pack and PC it. pretty simple. just simmer it for a while its really not that hard, i did it for the first time and colonization was steady and quick.

yes, pre-boiling popcorn is necessary!!! i was going to try the popcorn tek a few weeks ago and sortof forgot to pre-boil... i innoculated in a 1/2 pint jar and a couple days later the jar was full of sprouting corn-kernels. haha, we planted it and in two weeks it grew a foot.
