bring rye to a boil in a pot with water then turn down heat and simmer for 45 minutes or until berries begin to burst

It seems that the easiest way to get the water content right is to soak for 12-24 hours . Not only does that help kill endospores but also gets the moisture right , which can be a real bitch . It helps to add a few drops of jet dry to the water as it is soaking .

1. Soak the rye for 24 hrs, 12 won't do the job.

2. Simmer the rye for 40 to 45 min, you'll know it right when a few of the kernels start to explode.

3. Rinse the rye off real good after the simmer and let drain for a few min.

4. load rye into jars with no extra water and pc for 1hr at 15psi.

5. Let the jars cool overnight to be safe.

6. Shoot with spores.

you can skip the soaking, just boil it till somme kernels pop, then drain it, make sure you get all the extra water out, you just want the kernel to be full not wet with water. thats pretty key.

the best thing to do with the rye is throw it out, pick up some birdseed. Birdseed is less acidic, cheaper, and contams less

When people refer to "rye", they are most likely referring to rye grain (berries), the material which is ground into flour for rye bread. Rye grass seed is exactly that, grass seed which is planted for lawns, and used to produce sclerotia when inoculated with Mex A spores or Tampaniensis. Rye berries can be a food source for almost any cubie when sterilized in mycobags or canning jars...

I use the clear one on purpose. If a casing stalls and you don't know if it's a contam it's easy to check with a clear container.

As far as skipping the soak don't, the reason it's done is for endospores to germanate not to add moisture. The moisture is added durring the simmer. Bacteria endospores are not killed in a PC.

WBS is great for spawn, rye is great to case directly. Reason is rye holds much more water then wbs or millet.
