Growing Setup
    #2463826 - 03/23/04 03:14 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Alright, well im growing in a wooden trunk in my closet. I lined the trunk with that thin plastic and have had my jars sitting in the bottom of that colinizing. When they are colonized i planned on filling the bottom with soaked perlite and then putting the cakes in there. Perlite is my only way for humidity and i dont have any kind of fan system or light system set up.

I was wondering if opening it a few times a day would be enough light and enough fanning to get the shrooms growing? If not i had planned to get a small batter powered light to just velcro to the top of my trunk lid to provide light.

Also i was wondering if this type of set up would be fine for casings or would i have trouble growing the shrooms in there?

What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

I've never thought of just putting a "touch light" on the lid... anyone see why there would be a problem with this? just turn it on or off each time that you fan maybe? that way it gets a few hours of light every few hours...

I'm referring to those round lights that are battery powered that you can get from any department store for a few bucks.

Should work ok if you can keep the RH up. Put the perlite in a tray or something to keep water leaking through it. You can get small battery powered flouro's at wal-mart that would work great. IMO, I would give them at least a few hours of light a day! Good Luck!

Mycelium requires a certain spectrum of light, I believe in the blue region, to trigger growth. Flouro's cover all color spectrums. Your idea might work but not sure if its the right spectrum, try it!

Well i would get a small flouro light defeniately. The tray idea is good thanks i just planned on putting it on top of the plastic i lined my trunk with. How about the fanning how many times a day and for how long? And how about casing my substrate in there instead of growing it just out of the cakes or would i have some trouble growing it in a casing in this type of set-up?

Oh ya and i dont have any incubating purposes. I was hoping whatever heat that my light put off would be enough but i know thats not a very good way. Any suggestions on the heating, casing, and fanning?

Casings don't require quite as much humidity as cakes so all you would probably need to do mist and fan 3 times a day. Casing would be the way to go if you think you can do it! If you decide on cakes, then perlite would be smart plus 3-4 fanning's a day and maybe even 1 mist on the sides a day.

So you mean no kind of humidity control? just wet the verm i have in my casing and then mist a few times a day when i fan it.

I spray then fan about 3 times a day. You are the humidity control! You have to try some things to see what works for you. Just keep the humidity between 85%-90% and keep the casing layer nice and moist you should be ok.
