    #2462317 - 03/22/04 11:19 PM (20 years, 29 days ago)

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone does tub in tub with a non submersible fish tank heater, and how they do it. Any help would be cool! Thanks

hmmm i think all fish tank heaters are submersible....otherwise how would they heat the water?

When my tub in tub was out of commision, I put my jars in a small closet with a space heater on low. Worked good, heated to about 84F, though probally used more juice.

when i say non submersible i mean one that can only be under water to a certain point, like if it were all the way under water it would get busted

You could easily cut a hole for the ?hang on the edge? type of heater. Go to your hardware store and find a rubber grommet that will fit perfectly around the heater tube. Also, pick up a tube of RTV Silicone (blue stuff), or another type of silicone sealer.

Coat the grommet with RTV, then seal the hole. You may want to take some sandpaper to the tub as things do not like to stick to its smooth surface very well. It would not hurt to put a little ring of silicone around your heater as well, as long as you don?t plan to remove it. As long as you seal it up well you should have no problems.

The tub in the tub works very well, and as long as you keep bleach in the water it can go a very long time without changing. Just keep adding a little bit of fresh bleach every month or so. I picked my heater up at Wal-Mart for $15, it is fully submersible (not to mention leak free).

Ok, this will work and it?s easy. In this pic you see the set up?

Notice the pump next to the heater. Well if you have a heater that can?t go completly under the water just mount it on the side the way it?s suppose to go. Then mount (I have no idea how) a little water pump like the one pictured so that it aims at the heater. That should stir the water pretty well. The warm water will be moving around the tub. (just a thought)

The pump is not really needed here. You have the water naturally moving slowly because of the heat gradient, since the warmer water moves to the higher regions in the tub, and when it cooled down, it moves again further down where the heater is. This way you have a pretty good heat distribution even without the pump.

True but water movement in this way is way to slow to be very effective. You can definitely tell that the bottom of a tub in tub without a pump is warmer on the bottom. Well in this case it doesn?t really matter cause the heater would have to be on the top of the outer tub and something is going to be needed to move the warmer water to the lower part of the tubs.

Instead of bleach I use rubbing alcohol. it works ten times better. I been using a TiT for a few months now and have not had to change the water since I got it. Just in case u guys where interested.

My current setup uses a non-submersible heater. I've got a large rubbermade bin with about 8 inches of water in the bottom, and I've got a small bin that is big enough to hold 12 jars floating in the water. The heater hangs off of the little bin into the water and heats it all. The body of water is so huge that it doesn't matter that the water isn't moving the heat around. I am sitting at a consistant 84-85 degrees using this setup.
