    #24630096 - 09/14/17 10:12 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing on a NE hill. Lots of skinny small trees. Lots of leaves and grass and critter paths.

Gills:
Closed cap but looked to be young

Stem:
Length1-3", diameter1/4", color white, texture ribbed, hollow, thick,

Cap:
Diameter 1/3", color dark brown, texture soft I believe,

Spore print color:
Unfortunately didn't do it as the cap was closed

I asked a couple local people and the said discard but not sure if they really knew. I discarded them but keep thinking about it. They were all over. Can anyone I'd please. I appreciate the help I am knew to this.

Not a morel. Morels have openings in the top, kind of like a group of caves. More like a stink horn to me.

Morel is the Minnesota state mushroom, and at the right time of year they are very common. One of the few choice edibles we have had growing in our back yard since we bought the place. We don't see them every year anymore though.

Yeah I love hunting morels and these def. Are not it. This hill side was littered with these. But since someone brought up morels here is some eye candy I got this year! Also some pheasant back in there.

 Google guys....give it a try sometime its amazing.... "Verpa conica, commonly known as the bell morel or the thimble fungus, is a species of fungi in the family Morchellaceae. Sometimes mistaken for a true morel (Morchella genus), this species is a "false morel" characterized by a cap resembling a thimble that is freely attached to the stem.[2]"

Thank you for the ID! I had googled mushrooms of Iowa but didnt seem to find a similar one. But your fund is it. The ones I found definitely don't have a wrinkles cap like the ones in those pictures it says the caps do vary and the stem is a dead on match! Also it had helpful links to other morel look alike and was good information to see to sharping my hunting skills even more.

Last I knew, "false morels" were in a different genus. That must have changed in my time away.

I suppose that the only thing like this that I've seen is true morels or stink horns in my area.

I haven't heard of a "false morel" in Morchella, but my bigger hunting days were a couple of decades ago. Even panaeolus is different from my mushroom upbringing.

Verpa is a genus in the family of Morchellaceae, as is Morchella which contains the mushrooms commonly known as morels. Verpa conica is a species within this family nicknamed the "bell morel" but it's not a true morel.
