Thomas Jefferson Statue Covered & Protested in Charlottesville

This is the same group (give or take) that called for the removal of the statue of Robert E. Lee and clashed with protesters of that decision back in August.

Students and other University of Virginia community members shrouded a statue of Thomas Jefferson in black Tuesday night during a rally criticizing the university’s response to recent white nationalist demonstrations that unfolded on and near the campus.
About 100 people gathered for the protest Tuesday night, according to the Daily Progress. They covered the statue of the university’s founder, and signs reading “racist” and “rapist” were placed on it.
Speakers at the rally pressed the university to comply with demands made by the Black Student Alliance last month that included removing Confederate plaques from the university’s rotunda and banning white supremacist groups from campus, the Daily Progress reported.
The Black Student Alliance said in an email that it did not coordinate Tuesday night’s protest and that it was carried out by “unaffiliated student activists.”

The protest occurred weeks after the Charlottesville City Council voted to cover the statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in black. That decision followed a violent weekend of demonstrations in the city that left one woman dead and many hurt.
The university’s president, Teresa A. Sullivan, wrote in an email to the university community that she opposed protesters’ decision to cover the statue in a black shroud and said it was removed.
Grade Point newsletter News and issues affecting higher education. Sign up “I strongly disagree with the protestors’ decision to cover the Jefferson statue. I also recognize the rights of those present at the protest to express their emotions and opinions regarding the recent horrific events that occurred on our Grounds and in Charlottesville,” Sullivan wrote. “Our community continues to heal, and we must remain respectful of one another.”
She went on to acknowledge Jefferson’s vexing history, noting that the former president made “many contributions to the progress of the early American Republic.”
“In apparent contradiction to his persuasive arguments for liberty and human rights, however, he was also a slave owner,” she said. “The University has acknowledged its controversial history and we continue to learn from it through open dialogue and civil discourse.”
John Whitbeck, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, issued a statement Wednesday morning criticizing the protest, and called on police and university administrators to “move swiftly to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
“The vandalism of the Thomas Jefferson statue at the University of Virginia is the next step in the extreme left’s movement to erase our history,” he said. “The defacing of our historical monuments is not free speech, it is a criminal offense, plain and simple.”

I give little fucks about most historical figures because I believe all the wrong people were idolized and brought to power, which is why we are where we are now.
T.Jefferson was a lifetime slaveholder, a legislative and international racist, there's convincing evidence he was a pedophile and incestuous. Just to name a few things..
I think he was just another sick bastard throughout history, of which we have plenty. Put his statue is a museum.

My thoughts exactly.
I don't live there anymore, but I was born and raised in the South. My great, great, great grandfather fought and died for the Confederacy, and I give zero shits about some silly statues of Lee, Jackson, etc. I feel the same way about statues of Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers.
If they are bothering all these people, I say just take all of them down. I don't buy the argument about "preserving history" at all.
Nobody learns about history from these statues in the first place. Growing up, statues of these Confederate guys were all around me, and there is very little to learn from them. It's a fucking statue with a little plaque. If you want to learn, you read books. You visit the battlefields. IMO, Civil War battlefields would be a great place to relocate these statues to.
I just don't see why they are of any significance, or why the statues were even created in the first place. They are just big, dumb, ugly statues, ffs. Who gives a shit? It is so bizarre to me that suddenly all these people give a shit about statues they never paid attention to before..

yeah, but regardless of all that, no one was a fucking bleeding-heart liberal back then, either. not even bleeding-heart liberals.
History IS redundant, but it doesn't repeat itself. the ideologies of old, are dead, and live on only ostensibly, in name.

I definitely think it is kinda ridiculous that those people on the left are so obsessed with the statues coming down, don't get me wrong. Like, it's just a statue, why can't they just ignore it?
But at the same time, I haven't seen a single good reason why the statues shouldn't come down/be relocated.
I know I would not miss any of the statues in my hometown. I have just never felt any attachment to them in the first place, so it's like...go for it, take 'em down if it will make you feel better.

I personally don't think these kids are actually trying to make our country better. I think they're just trying to make themselves feel important, like their doing something good, like their parents before them and their parents before them. History repeats itself only because we are always human annd have the same human weaknesses.
If they wanted to make the country better they'd be protesting something that matters.

Probably exactly why no one cares about or for them anymore. Relevant history was killed by standardized education.

I doubt they feel very inspired to take on more serious issues, considering the outrage they have caused by trying to do something as insignificant and simple as taking down a statue.
There is really no hope for change at all. People are too arrogant, stupid, and stubborn.

i hear you but...all i'm saying is they are insane for going so apeshit over the statues. let them relocate it, don't go fucking crazy and tear them down...that's what like ISIS does and shit.

Just throwing this out there: Jefferson was himself enslaved to inherited debt from his father-in-law. (yes, that was a thing) He was thumbed under that debt until the day he died, which prevented him from being able to free the slaves he had, like he would have preferred.

You know what the big whoop is Mr "traitors" and "they lost the war."
There was also a statue of TJ vandalized in Ohio.
If you ask me these people are actually doing a disservice to African-American rights. They still face real issues, rape being an issue our society still faces too, and statues, or the removal of them, have absolutely nothing to do with it. They're getting people to listen with this shit and it is likely to make them cover their ears when they wanna start talking about real issues.
