HELP! My puppy was eating a mushroom...
    #2205726 - 12/28/03 01:14 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

Hi, my 9 week old black lab puppy came in from the yard eating a mushroom. It look decomposed or really chewed up. It was dark brown...but I know it's impossible to identify. My question is if there are any Florida back yard mushrooms that my puppy could be eating that would harm her. Thanks.

Unless you can get a positive ID (read the sticky in the hunting forum, the helpful people there can give you advice), I'd say take her to the vet maybe get her stomach pumped? If I had a puppy I wouldn't wanna fuck around and wait it out..

Monitor her and get an ID on that badboy. It was all in chunks? Are there any more fruiting around your yard?

No, I don't even know if she ate any, she was just chewing on it, and it was brown and chewed up... I don't think there are any more. I'm going to watch her to see if she throws up and if so I'll call the vet. I know it's not an aminita, but thats about it.

DEFINITELY monitor her for the next 24 hours. Keep the mushroom in a baggie in case you do have to go to the vet. If she starts puking, shaking, irregular breathing get her to the vet (common sense, I know).

If she starts saying how God has a tail and must be a dog (G-O-D, D-O-G), or how her paws look like they're paws but they're not REALLY paws, she probably just ate a cubie

Ha ha, the shape and size (hard to tell much more because it's all mashed up) looks kinda like a cube and wondered if she found some of mine somehow...but there is not way she got into them as they are in the trunk of my car at the moment lol. Thanks for the advice I will obviously observe her closely but I don't think she could have eaten it without throwing it up if it's poisonous because she is only 9 weeks old and puppies don't have very developed insides (everything goes in and comes out quickly lol) I got the shroom out of her mouth as soon as I saw it and put it on the porch table just in case. I'm in FL and mushrooms are popping up all the time so probably (hopefully) it was just a random garden mushroom.

Dogs eat mushrooms all the time. Some of the mushrooms are poisonous.

In general, just watch the dog to see if it gets sick. If it does, take it to the veterinarian.

If the dog goes into a coma, do *not* have it euthanized. Wait at least a couple days before you consider doing something like that. The normal symptoms of the non-lethal Amanitas in dogs include a coma (which will make the dog seem very near death) for a day or two. They will almost always recover. There have been many cases where the veterinarian was unaware of this possibility and the animal was put down.

The odds are very good that your dog won't get sick at all.

Thanks for the advice toxic man...she seems just fine...playful, hungry, gone to the bathroom a few times. I just wanted to be sure, but I'll keep that coma thing in mind if she does get sick.

Thanks, I found them at my trainer's barn where I keep my horse. I have been finding them even with these cold snaps we have been having where the temps at night are freezing. I basically have so many mushrooms and have given/sold them to so many people in the last 6 months I have been finding them that I have no desire to take them any more. Tripping 30 times in 6 months is wayyy to much overkill!!

It was 2 days ago, and she seems fine. I tried calling my vet and several others but they were closed on sunday.

speaking of pets and mushrooms, this one time my wierdo friend gave literally a mound of cubies to his cat, i didnt think that the feline would eat the fuckers, but to my dismay--scarfed them down like it was the best tasting thing it had ever eaten.. unfortunately, i wasnt able to witness the results. turns out that it had something else planned for that day and just wanders off. i never did find out if that cat ever came back ..

there are quite a few toxic LBMs (little brown mushrooms) throughout the USA. some might be fatal, i dont know since I'm not a mycologoist. i'd go to the vet though, better safe than sorry. hope everything turns out alright. peace

that cool that your puppy is alright. i love dogs. once my dog ate a mescaline sandwich. i was trying to scarf down a big bag of cactus jerky and thought it would be easier on a peanut butter sandwich....it wasn't. so i threw it down and smoked a bowl. the next day my little dog was gobbling down the whole thing. it was gone before i could stop her but man did she get loaded. walking all wobbly and looking all around. i was really concerned but based on how she was acting she had a great trip!
