Bumbaclot's EcoThinkTank
    #24625863 - 09/13/17 12:38 PM (2 months, 3 days ago)

Not really sure if this is the place to post such a thing but I'm majoring in Biology and this semester the Bio class that I'm in has an assignment that is a course-long "Ecotank" of any variety. The requirements are: Set up an Ecosystem, complete with abiotic and biotic factors. After 3 Weeks of baseline testing ONE variable is changed and remains so for the remainder of the experiment.
I have a few ideas but nothing I'm willing to commit to yet so I figured maybe some of you wonderful scientists had a few thoughts on the subject. What would be a cool experiment that I could do for the next 10 weeks or so? Maybe this could be a good place to just in general share experiment ideas with each other.:god2:

I wasnt planning of doing anything fish related but after reading up on Spirulina I do have a mild interest in that. Terrariums are allowed so if you got any cool ideas for that im all ears. Thanks STA!

I can't remember the details but I know there's a dude who has a thriving hermetic aquarium that hasn't been opened since the seventies. I have a closed mason jar with sinicuichi growing in it, has been going for about a year now with no maintenance. Can it be strictly botanical? If so then it should be pretty easy and fun.

Also I can't really think of any variables that you could change that aren't either boring or already done. Maybe you could discovery something important and share with us.

And does it have to be completely closed? I'm not sure I know what qualifies as an exosystem.

One idea is to create a tropical vivarium/terrarium and simply change the amount of light.

I had to give an instructional speech over the topic of my choice, I decided to create an environment for crested geckos (just without the animals)

This is what I made within 7 minutes during a presentation. I have kept it going for 6 months or so. The only factor that has changed (aside from the pitcher plant being thrown in) was the amount of light the terrarium received. As you can see a few of the plants have died.

Once I put the pitcher plant in there (it was attracting fruit flies and needed to be moved) I noticed a few of the plants have died because they had too much light so I threw the rag on the back to diffuse the natural sunlight. I've been able to observe quite a few different things within this 6 months of keeping this terrarium up.

Does it have to be self-sustaining or can you add water on a schedule?

So I've decided to test what happens when live Spirulina is added to soil by means of an 8 hour flood. I'm gonna grow or culture (whatever the nomenclature is) a bunch of spirulina for 4 weeks then flood a separate container over the course of 8 hours to simulate water flowing by. Then I'll measure soil contents, monitor plant growth, fungi etc. for 6 more weeks.

Yes there will be a light source providing 16 hrs each day. Haven't got a bulb yet but I'm doing research on spectrums and such.

Probably gonna cost $100 which is fine because after this I'll have a ton of spirulina left over and if the experiment has promising results I'm going grow a large amount to amend my 3800sqft garden.

I imagine it will prove to be quick to decompose and will leave behind several important nutrients.
