So a late casing layer might help? I'll do this with half my boxes and see the performance .

When you get a fat pinset try bottom watering. My house drys out sub like no other even with the lid on and misting a bunch.

Old info, colonized grain can be exposed perfectly fine, shouldn't matter one bit.
That sub (MP's) looks pretty damn bacterial.

When I make mine up in a day or 2, I was going to use baked verm. But I'm guessing I should use some CVG set aside from spawning. I think I'll try casing at spawn first.

thats more of a top layer than a casing. top layers have given me mix/weird results.
like odd growth and shorties. put they always pin really fast for me.

So neither of my ape shoeboxes ended up being ape...

Gotta go back to spores. I must have misread my chicken scratch somewhere along the line
The good news is that they yielded well. 1.2oz per 3 cups spawn

Would 3.5 cakes per box work? Or should I do 5 cakes in 1 box, and top fruit the other 2?

5. Theirs roughly 150-180g of brf in 5 cakes. Most quart jars are 150-200g of grain per jar depending on grain and how much you fill them up.

You should. Half pints can be dumped into ziploc bags, crushed and then transferred to 4 grain jars each. They colonize in 3-5 days without introducing any liquid/water to the mix.
G2G the 4 into 30 and from 1 cake you have 30 quarts of spawn in 10 days. (minus the cakes colonization)

The simplicity of cakes makes them fun. They can also do very good knocked up with questionable LC, or LI.
