Muda Bottles; Weight vs Vol; Recipe Trial; 1

I am doing a trial run of a recipe I thought would be good for MudaBottles. If these turn out well I want to implement them into bags at 1kg/1.5kg/2kg/and 2.5kg in total weight to see the yield curve/BE/difference in yield with different water contents/etc. I have been wanting to do this for awhile and this is nothing new, I have been inspired by a few results ive seen on the boards over the last couple months and the last few days as well.
I am making 10 quart jars.. So check this, I weighed and measured the volume of oats and millet multiple times, then found an average to the weight by vol.
Millet; 680g per quart, 340g per 2 cups Oats; 580g per quart, 290g per 2 cups
(this is NOT a perfect measurement but nicely close as in the end you will see i am only about 1 cup off)
I wanted 40% of my recipe for the 'bottles' to be grain.. and of that 40% i wanted it to be a 60/40 split between oats and millet by volume. (i think in the future i will do 70/30)
I want 4 quarts of grain once fully hydrated and 6 quarts of substrate. I weighed out 4.8 cups of oats or 696g. I weighed out 3.2 cups of millet or 544g. mixed together it was a total of 8cups/2quarts or 1240g of grain. I soaked this for about 26 hours or so. I was aiming for 24 but ya know how it goes. I washed it really thoroughly with super hot water for a good minute or two and let it dry while i made the substrate.
It looked like this after the wash. I measured 3.8 quarts of total hydrated grain(a little short) and dumped it into a bucket

For the substrate I went by weight and estimation. I wanted a split by dry weight of
50% Coir 15% bran 15% verm 20% brf
I estimated that i would need 400g of coir for about 3.5 quarts or so of sub and the rest of my ingredients would chime in at 2.5 quarts. So i weighed the rest based on these estimations for a total of 800g dry split by;
400g Coir 120g Bran 120g Verm 160g brf
This is what the supplement mix looked like together as far as volume goes. Verm on the left in bowl, in right quart jar brf/bran inasanwich.

After breaking up the coir the best I could I mixed it all together. I wanted to see what field capacity would be for this mix. % of water by wt. So i measured out 800ml of water in 4 vessels.. remember our dry weight is 800g so for 1:1 1:2 1:3 1:4 etc etc (50%/66%/75%/80% water by wt)

I added one and mixed. added a second and mixed. it got nicely hydrated so for the third one i only mixed 400ml of the third vessel. making for a total of 2000ml of water.

so with a total of 2800g of substrate we have a water content of 71.4% by weight. I mixed the sub into the bucket of grain 2 quarts at a time and mixed. i did this 3 times for a total of 6 quarts of substrate.

This is how much substrate I had left after measuring out 6 quarts...

I squeezed to check field capacity after mixing and bluhblam

I loaded 10 jars exactly with the mix and their was no waste left in the bucket. came out perfectly for enough space for a casing after full colonization.

I loaded them into the PC and put them at 15psi for 2 hours.
I will inoculate these and case them with coir a few days after full colonization and then fruit in a mono with an inch or two of perlite on the bottom just to catch debree and excess water, (thanks for the idea munch and other user i cant remember)
I think 50% sub is a great choice as mushrooms are 90% water. supplemented with verm to help with absorption and volume but supplemented with bran for N and nutes and brf for dense volume by dry weight, not taking too much space but still packing weight.. the grain is essential as i dont think my LC will colonize straight substrate. lol. I chose to go with oats for volume and millet for inoculation points. I will see about stretching the grain to less volume/weight to get more substrate(water) in there, i think the millet will help with this a bit.
Let me know what you guys think, feel free to chime in or give me some advice, i am always open to it. much love to the online mushroom community, AMU, and all the rest of the gods and earths out there.

I inoculated 4 of them with Redboy LC and the other 6 with PESA LC. I used 12cc per jar and on one Redboy I did 24cc. I shook them heavily and smacked the side of the jars to settle it back after shaking. I'll keep the thread updated

Here's what some of the jars look like a week later;
I ended up multiplying the recipe above to make 12kg of total substrate for six 2kg bags. Ended up making 7 and 1 1.3kg bag with the below recipe; 3600g oats 1200g coir 360g bran 360g verm 480g brf 6400ml water
Cooked up grain. Dumped and let dry while made substrate. Broke up the coir, added dry ingredients, mixed, added water, mixed evenly. Added cooked grain, mixed evenly.
Filled up the bags, weighed em, loaded into PC, cooked em.
G2G 1qt of colonized grain into each bag, tied and shook up. The 1.3kg bag I put some LC into. Buhblam
3 PESA (1 by LC) 5 pe6

Grain in a bag? That's how a lot of us do it. Especially if we're doing more than a shoebox.😉
