First try at grafting(Success!!!)
    #2462222 - 03/22/04 10:56 PM (20 years, 29 days ago)

So, I went ahead and attempted to graft a couple buttons onto one of my trichos this afternoon.  Didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped, but I got them on there without too much trouble and they seem to be sticking nicely (as I found out when the damn elastic came undone afterwards).  With a little luck, these guys will take and show some growth soon.  I'll have my fingers crossed for them  .  A small slice found it's way into my mouth somehow and damn, people aren't joking when they say it's fucking bitter as hell :lipsrsealed:.  Still have a couple more trichos and good sized buttons to do once I see if these ones work out.  I'll update with the results in a few weeks

Lookin' good! :smile2:

Are they var. Caespitosas (sp?)? Those things get crazy if you graft them, buttons all over the place...

Good luck with those, looking forward to updates!

How fast do they grow then? Or in other words how much faster than normal?

yeah, they were sold to me as var. caespitosa.

grafting is supposed to make them grow quite a lot faster than normal.  exactly how much faster I don't know, but check out the nook or some of una's threads here and you'll see it speeds up development a lot.

And for those interested in obtaining a few buttons to try this with, look around, I'm sure the place I got mine from has been posted a few times in threads dealing with such things (why, I don't know :shake:).  They're not hard to get a hold of , kind of pricey, but not too bad considering how long they can take to grow...

Depending on whether or not it's actively growing and the rootstock you use you could conceivable go from a seedling to a golf ball in a month, sometimes even bigger than that in 2 - 3 months.

Dig up some of Una's posts where it's outlined the dates and update pictures within the same post and you'll have some graphical representation of just how big it can get in a certain amount of time.

bah

Checked the grafts out today and the fkn elastic came undone on one of them again and knocked the smaller button off :crying:.  I think I'll try regrafting it in the morning, but I'm gonna have to cut a lot off the bottom, so I dunno if it'll work.  Anyone tried regrafting a failed one like that before?  The larger one seems to be doing alright, so hopefully I can at least get it to take.

don't worry, it's all about trial and error.
actually i find the buttons pretty forgiving, one can always cut a (straight) slice out of the bottom and go again.
one hint...
ASSURE the fixing of the buttons, always check at least twice a day the tension, you want it a little tense but not too much and don't feed water to the rootstock or it will expand/contract and make things harder for your objectives.
good luck!

i had a lot of trouble with my first graft, i had to graft it three times! each time, taking a fresh slice off each cactus, and mating them back together.

i really like attaching the scion using super glue, it works extremely well. every time previously, i had used rubber bands, but those are a real hassle, as you've found out. if you have trouble with subsequent attempts, you might try that. just prepare your graft as normal, slide the two together, hold in place, and run a thin continuous bead of glue all the way around the base of the scion.

traditionally wax is used to hold most grafts in place. Superglue i wouldn't use since it has ketone solvents and other junk in it.

i have used superglue once but that graft is surpassed by younger grafts made by other ways (attachments).
i find adehesive (isolant..) tapes to be the most perfect attaching method. highly adjustable and customizable.
actually i'm about to regraft this superglue one because it doesn't dies neither grows... wtf?

thanks for the tips everyone

I ended up giving the pedros some water before I saw them though  .  But I think things will be alright, I took the elastic off before I left and it seemed like both scions were stuck to the rootstock well.  Got a few more shots, taken yesterday:

closeup of the button that came off, 3 days after I regrafted it

both grafts after removing the elastic

a couple other pedros and the mama lophos

More updates to come next time I make it back to check up on them, I hope it worked ...

Thanks, I could only leave it on 3 days for the regrafted one (thursday morning to sunday morning), cause I had to leave on sunday and didn't want it left on until I go back home who knows when.  Hopefully that was sufficient, if not, oh well, I have enough buttons to try a few more times next time I'm there  .

It seems to have worked, got to check out the grafts today and they're still connected and staying nice and firm.  Not the prettiest grafts I've ever seen, but not bad for a first try I think .  Looks like they're just starting to grow
