Anxiety chain smoker
    #24620817 - 09/11/17 01:52 PM (6 years, 7 months ago)

I could seriously use some advice on how to either seriously cut down or quit.

It's such a part of my being now, I'm almost crippled by a compulsive need to light up.

I smoke more than anyone I know and probably anyone I've ever met. It's bad, multiple packs a day.

I've decided to start cutting down by making little changes. For example I've decided that I will wait at least 30 mins from waking up before I light up instead of sparking a smoke as soon as I roll out of bed. Also I've decided that I will not immediately smoke a cigarette after dying one out.

I've quit in the past for a whole year once. Now it's seems like life has beaten me down so hard that I almost just don't have the strength to fight. The amount of things on my plate right now (stress), make it all the harder to even consider quitting

This is something that has bothered me for some time. I'm gonna buy some nicotine gum today and hopefully begin to start supplementing.

You could vape.  Find the nicotine level that gives you the spike you need and then gradually reduce it to zero.  That way you still get to hit something while only enduring slightly lessened spikes until there are no more level spikes.  I still vape with a modest nicotine level but no longer smoke which is insane when I think about it.  I was pretty heavy into the smokes.

Just ween yourself down to a pack a day or get a 60$ entry level unit with digital temp adjustment, maybe get a script for Valium or xanax

Just quit cold turkey. Find something else to do with your time. Like going to the gym, or hiking. Cold turkey is the way to go.

GL either way

Couple of ideas:

It seems obvious,  but chain smokers are notorious for puffing while distracting with something else... browsing Shroomery, driving in car, talking on phone, etc.  If thats you, switch to practicing these tasks without a cigarette. When you smoke, do nothing other than have your smoke, sit there and do nothing else.

On the outside of your pack, slip a piece of paper in cellophane. Mark a tally each time you light up.

Get a mason jar with lid. Every morning, fill it halfway with water.  Have it with you each you smoke, drop your butt in it when through. Try shaking it up when you're done.

All of these exercises are meant to increase your awareness and make you more mindful of your smoking. Small changes that have a big impact.

Also, not sure if it was mentioned, but you can try switching up your brand to something you arent crazy about i.e. if youre a menthol smoker go regular, and vice versa.

Wow sounds like some very solid tips, thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. Switching to vaping isnt for me and abruptly stopping is too tough without some preparation

I need to change up my routine first before abstaining completely.

"When you smoke, do nothing other than have your smoke, sit there and do nothing else."

God damn will that be difficult!

I'd imagine it makes you very apparent of just how much time smoking eats up.
Sick pic in your sig btw.
