Wiring six 12v fans
    #2458194 - 03/21/04 06:50 PM (20 years, 30 days ago)

I just bought myself six 12v fans and I need to get them running 24/7 at around 8 or 9 volts. Rather than go and buy 6 dc adapters and create a huge mess of wires and plugs, is there something else I can do to get them workin right? I dont have an extra PC power supply either.

Thanks, 003.

the five 12V fans connected in series (in a line) need 12 x 5 = 60V. but in parallel they take less, about [#x%^fn8^esp] if my maths are right. obviously my maths needs a little tweaking

go get yourself a transformer with multiple inputs and outputs from a hardware shop, maybe a taiwanese one if you're in a big city. i have several cheapos from taiwan that can take ~120V or 220-240V in, and put 1.5, 3, 6 or 12V out ..... so presumably one can be found that puts the right amount out. plus how many amps do the fans take? but i'm guessing.

maybe this helped, maybe not
psst/ those sloppy mods shoulda moved this to the technology forum - loadsa technogeeks in there will snap this up pronto   :yesnod:

PC power supply is the most reliable, cheapest solution, IMO

If you want 8-9v in each fan, and are hooking them in series, you need a powersource that can provide 48-52v.

If you are hooking them up in paralell, you only need a 8-9v powersource, but the fans will draw a LOT more current.

Hope this helps.

And probably easiest to find.

DC or AC fans? if DC, just grab a car battery... u could run 100 computer fans for a month on a car battery. If AC you could butcher some old electronic piece of crap... like a radio out of the garbage or soemthing and grab the transformer out of it. Be careful... don't stick your tongue on the high voltage side.

Wire them in parallel. No need to f around with them.

computer fans can pull as much as 40Amps each. If he wires 6 PC fans in parallel, that can be anywhere from 20-300A. If his powersource isn't rated for that, it could get hot enough to melt and pose a serious fire hazard.

Unless you have a good powersource, series is the way to go. Just get one that can output around 48v. That will give you 8V per fan.

BTW, why the hell do u need 6 fans?

Small 12V fans like that usually draw .1 - 1.0 AMPs. To run them parallel, You need a 12 Volt supply with enough Amperage to operate the fans. Look on the fan and see what the Amp requirements are. To run five fans that draw .5 Amps each, you would need a 12 Volt power supply that provides at least 2.5 Amps. I'm pretty sure anyway!

I'm using an old halogen light (12v) with two pc fans (12v, .13amps) hooked up as shown (parallel, I believe) where i just clipped te wire above the ac converter and ttwisted all the negative wires together and all the positive wires together. this works aamazingly well, and i picked up all the stuf from my neighbor's trash. old halogen lamps ahave pretty good amperage, and you may not be able to get all 6 of them on one, but it iwill cut down a ton on plugins.

Sorry but if PC fans drew even close to 40 amps, the wires would be much, much thicker. I don't know where you got that information from but it is one of the most outrageous things I have ever heard.

I have a 12v fan sitting in front of me whose current load is only 0.9A, or 900 mA. If I were to hook 6 of these together in parallel , then I would have a power requirement of 5.4 amps. Your voltage requirements for these fans wired in series would be 6x the voltage of the fans. This is much harder to accomplish than finding a power supply capable of 12v @ 6 amps. Note: Don't forget to find out the current requirements of your own fans and add them up, do not use my figures...

Simply look for a power supply that is rated well above your current needs, say 1 or 2 amps above the requirements to avoid stressing or overheating the components. Then, it is simply a matter of getting a voltage regulator if you really need to adjust the power supply further. There are several regulator circuits you could build very easily, and I am sure there are ones you could buy fully functional out of the box as well.

Be warned, if you do build one, the largest power load I have listed for an adjustible regulator is 5.0 amps (in a TO-3 case), so you would need more than one to share the load (not to mention a heatsink). You can PM me for more details if needed, this type of thing is my life.

oopse, my mistake. I meant .49 Amp. I was going off of a 120mm fan that I had lying around, and didn't notice the decimal point. Boy, do I feel dumb.

Now, if we assume that all 6 fans draw .49A @ 12v, that means each fan has a resistance of 12/.49 = 24.49Ohm.

If hooked in paralell, they would have a total resistance of 1/[6*(1/24.49)] = 4.08Ohm.

If hooked in series, they would have a total resistance of 6*24.49 = 146.94Ohm.

If you wanted each fan to recieve 12v, and you were hooking them in paralell, you would connect them to a 12v rail, and the fans would draw:
12/4.08 = 2.94A.

If you wanted each fan to recieve 12v, and you were hooking them in series, you would need a 72v rail, and the fans would draw:
72/146.94 = .49A.

Looking at that, you would probably be best off hooking them in paralel, assuming ou can find a 12v powersource that is rated to at least 3A, which shouldn't be too hard to do. Here is a cheap one.
