How Long
    #2461464 - 03/22/04 09:32 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I have a pressure cooker that doesn't have a pressure gauge. I was just wondering how long I have to get the jars in there for. And how do I know when to start the time? I haven't used it yet, but from what i've read. The spring thing starts to shake or something can't really remember. Do I start the time from when it start to lift up or whatever it does

from the first 'rocker' or jiggle motion is when you start....90minutes from that point.

it goes something like this...
fill up water to maybe 1/4th or 1/2 up the jars in the pressure cooker
put jars in, close it, turn on the burner to medium-high
not quite high, dont want a very full boil (ymmv on your stove)

anyway, assuming your pc is good, and seal isnt shifty like my dogs, then after a bit, the rocker thing starts to shake and steam, it should be doing so at a medium pace, slow to medium....it definately shouldnt be going haywire, lots of excess steam lost using too hot of a setting.

and to finally answer your question
brf/verm jars usually need 45 min ONCE the PC has started rocking, not before.
45 is the minimum afaik, both from what my dog has seen or tested, and magash.
60 if you're paranoid.

if doing wild bird seed, or other grains, better do it for an hour and a half to two...might require depressurizing and refilling water for the stovetop pcs most of us have. also might not hurt to give the jars a shake between refill of pc....but of course this is theory, and for grain.

btw, your pressure cooker is most likely a 10psi model, cheap kind from wal-mart...effective, but small, and only 10psi...which is fine, you just have to cook longer.

the math behind pressure cooking: if 15 psi takes one hour to sterilize, 7.5 would be two hours. 10 psi would be an hour and half. someone feel free to set me straight on that
continuously questioning my math, i slept alot in that class.

hope this helps

I am using I guess it would be considered a cheap on considering I only paid 45 or something like that. I've looked on the box and haven't been able to find out what the max p.s.i is is there anyway to find out? Its just a little 5.5l one

rocker types are almost always 10 psi afaik
consider it 10psi
for that price, from a retail store, for that size, its 10psi or so

dont fret too much on it, what you have will in fact work, and thats what matters

Sounds like the same model I know of and its done its part to propogate a lot of shrooms in its day. PF jars are done consistently in 30' with little to no problems with contams, white wheat simmered for 60' then PC'd for 60' responds as well. The wheat is bought from a health food store packaged in plastic bags so the contamination rate is probably pretty low as far as grains go. Use pints jars, 3 pint pickle jars/not mason jars will fit in such a model, and this will probably produce a lengthy supply of your favorite model to test ride with. Dont forget the h2o2 in uninhibited use, I hear tell its used with great results on those tissue transfers.
Sorry to dribble on and on, its a pain in the ass to process such a limited quantity of substrate at a time with this model utensil, but I will bet you take enough precaution with the quantity you do prepare to succeed with regularity. Hope this helped your confidence if nothing else.
