Dunk and Cold Shock Quick Question
    #2460455 - 03/22/04 04:15 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Ive got some nice (I guess eh?) rhizomorphic mycelial growth (ropey and such) covering about 70% of my quickest PF jars here at Am U. Right now they are tightly sealed and I plan to keep them that way unless the growth slows down (is that a good idea? I just don't want to fix something that isn't broke but I keep reading about how great air circ is) for fear of contam...but then again they do have a dry vemiculite layer. Anyways I've got these little tuppaware containers (I guess they are about a pint or a pint and 1/2) that I planed on dropping the cakes in after birth for 12 hours and refrig. Im worried about the cakes falling apart when I place them into the fruiting chamber on the jar tops (which will be on moist perlite). What's the best way to handle the cakes so that they don't break apart or get hurt by my hands?
Ohyeah once the outside is completely colonized is a week about right to wait before birthing in your experiences?
Thanks for reading and any info you think might be helpful.

I use the straw tek. Put a hole in the top of the cake, fill with water and refil whenever the cake reuses the water. You can also pick the cake up by the straw so u never bruise it. Its a pretty classic idea but it works good for me.

Wear latex gloves and be careful!  I havn't bruised a PF cake yet.  PF cakes are usually pretty sturdy and shouldn't break if handled easily. If your growth slows inside you'r jars, simply turn your jars over for a day and this will introduce fresh air to your substrate.  After the outside colonizes, wait 4-5 days to birth.  That should allow the center to colonize completely.

Keeping them sealed is gonna slow you down bigtime.
Open the holes and just put some coffee filters if your worried.

Why put them in the containers. Just take out the dry verm layer and add water then put in the fridge. Notice the cakes are floating in the jar. I also got much better results leaving them in for 24 hrs.
