The whole point of coco coir being a casing material is it has NO nutritional value for mycelium or competitors (contams). If you were to inoculate coco coir, although there may be germination, nothing more will come of it.
Those bricks you found though are great for a casing layer, so feel free to use it, just don't inoculate it without another medium.

if ya wanna do bulk with coir...take half the amount of wormcastings and make tea..hydrate your coir with the tea...drain the wet castings mix with the dry castings, mix in the worm team coir..and hydrate to spec. sterilize or oven bake as usual..

I have used cior with neem added for two years now and it works very well.  Contamination is at a bare minimum.  But it does not have any nutrional value except one.  It does have a a-tryptamine compound in the fiber which I am doing some research on to further document the possbility of strength enhancement.  :shiftyeyes:

Coir as a casing material or coir as a substrate? This is an old thread which just got bumbed but the original poster was refering to using coir as a substrate straight from the brick.

I've used coir for years as a substrate. It actually has LOTS of nutes in it. I use it mixed with verm, coffee grinds and gypsum for substrate. I'm considering switching back to peat based casings, because I'm tired of the overlay problems with coir. It has so many nutes, the mycelia wants to colonize it like a substrate, even when it's 'diluted' by 50% with verm.

Have you ever used plain coir without any other nutritional additions?

I know it is great used in a substrate but as a substrate my readings would show it wouldn't support fruiting by itself.

No, never tried coir by itself. But again, I don't use any substrate by itself. I've found that if coir is good, coffee is good, manure is good, etc. etc., if you mix them all into a cocktail, it's even better. Just an observation.

I've seen pictures of 100% coir jars which show growth but I have never seen a picture of one of those jars fruiting but I've also never personally tried it so....

coco coir is a GREAT casing material. It helps hold the humidity in and prevent contams like no other that I've tried. I use white millet birdseed as a substrate and coco coir to case and I get about 4-7 flushes per casing with regular psylocibe strains every time.

Coir mixed with Lime, sesame seed or flour or grain or whatever makes great spawn for wood loving mushrooms
And a decent growout material for the same when formed into blocks and spawned with grain spawn (the supplement)
