Ganoderma sessile on cocoa mulch. I can't wait for my antlers!

I did a much shorter boiling hot water immersion of my substrate. Only an hour versus overnight. I made sure to stir the mulch and distribute the moisture evenly and let it steam off at the end. I think leaving it at a high temperature too long turned the mulch to sludge like the way wet rotting leaves get underneath.
I'm so excited that this wild clone I made of ganoderma sessile was so aggressive. It's only been 3 days and it's mostly colonized. I love the sweet earthy mushroomy smell that wafts out of the closet as I open it. I'll post more photos as things progress. It seems like the only project that's going well for me is the one I had control over every step. I can't wait for my antlers!

I wouldn't have even tried cocoa mulch if I didn't think it had potential being high in nitrate and having cellulose and lignins. I am hoping for some cool shit too. I'm going to repeat the oysters on cocoa mulch again on a few weeks. The replacement spawn most likely contaminated it. When I do the oysters I will also be careful to lower the moisture and will experiment with hot water immersion for a few bags and will properly pasteurize the others and will do a few bags of the cocoa mulch sterilized and supplemented with bran. I'm determined!

Also if I have the energy I will change the placement of my bags every other day to see if I can get zig zag antlers.

So I'm struggling with a very small contamination issue. I peeled off all the suspicious areas. I have finally concluded my issue is too much moisture in my substrate. Cocoa mulch seems to be a problematic material that can hold excess amounts of water. You can squeeze it and water won't come out but something about it's makeup allows it to really hold on to too much water. More caution has to be taken in the future. I'm thinking sterilizing this material
I drained all the excess water out of each bag and placed them in from of an open window in my basement to dry out. I should still hopefully get some conks but won't be able to close up the bags because it will get too moist.

My ganoderma sesille survived! No more contam. Sealed the bags up last night. I may just get those antlers after all.

The contam came back with a vengeance so it had to go because I didn't want a gross mess. I decided since it all looked nice and there were fruits in all the bags to bury it outside under expanded wood pellets. Whatever this contam is it dislikes FAE so maybe it will die off again. I know one of the contams is definately a pin mold. I'm not giving up on you ganoderma sessile.
I am going to definitely repeat cocoa mulch and sesille ASAP. Just pasteurized this time. I got a culture waiting in the wings. I want antlers damn it. At least I'll get some nice conks for tea maybe. If not everything will decompose and I'll grow something else there.

Hmmm- I think the best way to solve your oversaturation issue would be to add water little by little until you reach Field Capacity. Then load it into jars and boil. Sit there wth a thermometer and wait till the water approaches 200F. Remove from heat and place a lid on it and let it sit for 45 minutes, then remove the jars from the water and temp. In my dealings with things that generally will get the job done - the ending temp should be at or above 140F. If it's really high it probably got too much heat. Too low not enough- so tweak as needed.

It's something about the makeup of the cocoa shells. If you put boiling water on them it creates a gel like substance. Lesson learned. When I made my coir I put a little at a time and it worked out well. It doesn't get slimy. I am just going to add water while it's cold to prevent this and pasteurize it. I've been pasteurizing thing by waiting till the temperature of whatever it is reaches at least 130 in the middle then turning of the heat and then putting on the cooker lid. That works too? I don't know if ganoderma sessile will like the 60-70 degree weather we will be having for the rest of the month. Hopefully it's fine.

To properly pasteurize interior temps must be between 140 & 170F for 45 minutes.

I think the intention is by the time the inside gets up to 130 degrees the water is basically boiling. So once you close it off the temperature will continue to rise long enough to pasturize it. I just usually leave it till it cools down more than a few hours.

Your not understanding. Just because the water is boiling doesn't mean the internal temperature has reached boiling. It's like when you put a chicken in the oven. Just because you get the oven up to temperature doesn't mean the chicken is up to temperature internally. If you leave the chicken in the hot oven the temperature will continue to rise in the chicken even if you shut it off because residual heat is still inside the oven.
