Using poo 101
    #2459507 - 03/22/04 07:24 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

According to the faq on using poo"You want the poo free of ammonia, and ideally completely dried out. aged is easier, as nothing needs doing to it - leaching out ammonia is unnecessary"and then it says"mushrooms can grow on some fresh poo magnificently! but if you can get the older stuff, it has another advantage - the older stuff is also often full of a friendly white bacteria: you know how aged dung starts to turn white? that is not just the dung you are seeing: very fresh dung dries brown/green. the white is the bacteria you?re wanting, and where the poo is white, it is strongly established. it?s called firefang (actinomyces)." and then it goes on to say" 3. preparing the poo for spawning, mix the leached poo (dry or wet!) into your desired recipe, and pasteurize it."

STOP RIGHT THERE!!!!!What would be the purpose of finding old 'white looking' poo(firefang containing poo)if all your going to do is pasteurize it and kill the damn bacteria?
I also have found out that you do not need to do anything to cow poo at all-no leaching or pasteurising. You can even take a contaminated cake or bulk grain even if its contamed and take the healthiest part of the myc. and case it useing natural poo and it will produce mushrooms. Its been done!
Maybe I'm reading this wrong but it sounds as if it is contradicting itself :wtf:

Actinomyces are thermophilic.

The only shit I like to use is "stable dried" this isnt composted just dried and aged. I dont have to deal with the bugs that live in pooh in the fields and it seems to kick ass. This works well if you know someone that seasonally boards horses or keeps their livestock in the fields through the warmer months.

Ok in "Newbie terms" this means that the good bacteria is "heat resistant"?Right?

Yes, they thrive at higher temperatures. Pasteurizing should get rid of everything else but them. That's why you pasteurize instead of sterilize.

Don't go over 185'F or you will kill them too.

Yes, pasteurizing does not harm the useful ( thermopile ) bacteria. Only the bacteria that grow in the same temperature range as the fungi itself.
