Caving with The Duck
    #2459103 - 03/21/04 11:26 PM (20 years, 29 days ago)

Fellow Shroomerite ToiletDuk went caving with me today, and I have to give him credit for going, cause he knew I'd drag him through trackless woods, up and down steep hills and sheer bluffs and into hidden grottos in secret caves that few people have ever seen.

We went to my favorite caving ground, an area with literally 200 caves in just a couple square miles. We were going to dig open a hole I found a couple years ago, but someone moved my hole, dammit. I hate it when that happens.

So we visited several known caves, one of which slimed me head to foot with mud before I got six feet. We headed for greener pastures. Our final stop was a little-known cave with about a thousand feet of passage that connects to another cave with several miles of very challenging passage, including several pits, large walking borehole, and over a thousand feet of belly crawl over sharp rocks in a stream.

Duck hardly whimpered all day, though it was fairly rough going. It never ceases to amaze me that he's still willing to follow me into the backwoods hollows of middle Tennessee. He knows I'm crazy. :eyemouth:

We're going back Saturday. We'll be taking pics this time. We'll post some.

'Twas a great day, Duck.

If you're not making that up (well, even if you are), it sounds like a lot of fun. I've never been in a cave w/out a guide, but I still really enjoy getting to peep all of the geological/biological features you don't get to see aboveground. Post pics.

Damn, I guess. Kick back w/ a hog's leg (j in Tennessee, right?). I'm kinda doubting you're out of shape if you did that all in one day. The hike in probably would have had me churning up a fine batch of lung butter.

Oh, yeah, there'll be pics. There are some decent formations in the cave, including a pillar. I just hope we can come up with some party favors beforehand.

We didn't do the pits and all that. We don't have vertical gear. This was just a reconnaisance trip. Next time we'll get into the big borehole if we're up to it.

Still alive, eh, TD? I'm a little sore myself. I was doing some research last night, and there's another 500-foot cave just off the road down there. I must have walked right past the entrance on the way back to the truck. In fact, I read up on at least another dozen in the immediate area last night. Maybe I'll take off work on Friday.

Yeah, like the Duck said, we're between Nash and Knox. Caving paradise. Give us a holler if you're ever in the area, KK.

Oh, and TD, you might want to spend about 15 minutes a day crawling around your apartment this week. Get those muscles prepped for this:

A 75-foot belly crawl. If we can get through this, there's great big beautiful borehole just beyond. I can't fucking wait!

Duk and I were in a pretty wet cave a year or two ago - cold water up to the nads. I've got a pic of Duk in it, maybe I'll upload it tomorrow if Duk doesn't mind.

Pads are for sissies? Nothing like wearing off a silver-dollar sized patch of skin on your knee to make you appreciate good gear.

Right! So here it is.

That's ToiletDuk in a mile-long stream cave with some nice decorations.

Here's some of the stuff we saw in this cave:

Orconectes australis australis ("Cavie") (These have recently been reclassified as a separate species and I forget the name)
Rare eyeless albino crayfish. This was the only cavie of about 15 who held still long enough for a semi-decent photo. They were all greatly spooked by our presence. This cave is a popular spot if you're a cavie: it's where the chicks hang out.

Big Daddy the Troglophile - Cambarus tenebrosus - ("cavie-munching lobster-like crawdad")
This guy eats the cavies. He has eyes. And an appetite. And he's twice their size.

I'm the rat boy... I was always stuck crawling the holes and climbing shit before others went... for me pads were always a hinderance... I was always just a hardhat...

I'm about 200 miles south of you guys and have a few nice ones in my area, Cumberland is just the Tits when it comes caves... I may have some time this summer....

I always thought it would be fun exploring caves but since i live in Michigan and there aren't any (that I know of) I can't.  I did a little when we were passing through Kentucky but that was basically hiking and not actually going deep inside.  You're lucky that you have those formations there, they are exciting.

But even better if you wear funky sunglasses at the same time.

Some Caving Links [Re: kindkesey]
    #2464796 - 03/23/04 06:05 PM (20 years, 28 days ago)

Well shit, I don't have internet at home anymore, so I can't look up all my bookmarks. This is gonna have to be from memory.

A guy I've caved with a few times has a website with info on a few local caves:
Cumberland Adventures
When you get there, click on the 'Caves' link. Iron Cave, about 2/3 of the way down, is the one Duk and I went to Sunday and are going back to this weekend.

A guy named Chris Anderson has some awesome photos of caves:
Darklight Imagery
Be sure to check out his pics of Camp's Gulf Cave - it's a local cave with HUGE rooms (one is 700 feet long). Camp's Gulf is doable this summer sometime, but it scares me silly because of a ledge you have to walk across next to a 50-foot drop. It's also pretty grueling. His Rumbling Falls gallery is incredible - but I won't be going to that cave anytime soon - it's for extremely hardcore cavers.
