Volvariella bombycina.

In the second photo you can see the sac it burst out of, at the base of the stipe.
Only Volvariella do this on dead wood.

Fun fact, they smell like semen.

Are the gills to crowded thus ruling out Pluteus?

No, the thing that rules it out from Pluteues is the fuzzy cap, and the sac it burst out of, AKA the Volva.

Is this a tree you just cut down? It grew so weird! Cool cool cool.

That was a hidden mushroom.

It never had a chance to see light of day.

Until you intervened and cut a tree [=

This log was left from a pile I scavenged at the side of the road. Nobody burns willow but me. Last year There was River Birch-the good stuff.
