Do these work well? Can you take a pickle jar and put polyfil in the lid and use it as a mason jar?
Do they seal as well as a mason jar?

Canning lids are more versitle... that and all your jars will match 'cause you can buy them in bulk. Matching jars are easier in the pc...
I started with an odd collection of jars... I still keep an eye out for good looking jars. I like mayo jars a lot.

Mayo jars work great, but keep an eye out for cracks. Canning jar's glass can take alot more abuse.

I'm using pickle jars and similar (couldn't find mason jars here and shipping prices are prohibitive)
Only issue is getting your cakes out... You either gotta fruit invitro or spoon them out and case them.

I'm thinking of using them for spawn, so getting it out intact is not important.
Also, I won't be using a PC.

You never used anything other than Pickle jars, or you never used anything other than canning jars?

I cant seem to get mayo jars to hold up in the pc, pickle jars on the other hand seem to be somewhat thicker and come in a greater variety of sizes. I am actually considering doing some grain to grain to a gallon size pickle jar I have, considering being the key word. While I've read a ton of your posts and know you are well advanced in the practice of mycology, newbies out there can get intimidated by the list of supplies to get started with, but if anyone pays attention , it only takes a few weeks to save enough glass to get started with. Recycled baby food jars work well for cultures also

What part of the mayo jars won't hold up in the PC, the glass or the lid?

I dont know what they use in the US but in Australia the Mason jar style is not at all common. In fact its virtually absent. Instead we had something called a Vacola jar- similar but they use rubber seals and metal cap snot the intricate ring and seal of the Mason jar
There are dozens of jars i use from Peanut paste, vegemite, Pasta sauce, mayonaise nutella you name it - if theres a choice between glass or plastic juts buy the galss and you get yourself another jar The best ones have the plastic lids cos they dont rust For the Plastic lids you will need a drill to put a hole through for the polyfill, for the metal lids i use a hole punch and a hammer.
Ive switched entirely to either Mycobags in the Lab and polyfill style for experimentals (thanks Anno)
crap picture of the plastic lids with polyfill
I also stuffed around with the injectable tape when making liquid mycelium. I found a source of the same material as on Mycobags self healing ports and taped it over a hole so i coul add and remove liquid in a self sealed environment. Again is just use a tight sealing plastic lidded glass jar
Metal lid Sweet and sour sauce jars - perfect. In this case this was before Polyfill. when i just used to cap with alfoil and leave the lids loose for Aeration. That works but not as well
Injecting the jars with mycelial syringes

Yes, the lids on food jars here are one piece, not two like the canning jars.
So the plastic food jar lids can handle the high temps of a PC?

Plastic lids hold up fine. It's the thin walled glass in the maynoaise jars that "sometimes" develope a crack....Anymore I put something inbetween the jars to keep them from banging around during PC'ing. Seems to keep trouble to a minimum
