No, they're large City of Seattle phone books. You can put them in an oven bag, or a spawn bag to hold them together. I've also put them in spawn bags and used the PC. In fact, if you're not going to inoculate as soon as they cool, this is a better method because they stay protected by the bag. You could also wrap them tightly with tyvek, or even steel wire during boiling. Get creative.
I also drill about twenty 1/4" holes all over the phone book. These provide shortcuts for the mycelium to crawl up between the pages, thus colonizing the book faster. RR

The water they were prepared with lasted through colonization and first flush. They were soaked overnight in water prior to second and third flushes. RR

Instead of grain spawn, it would be cool to use corrugated cardboard cut to the size of the phone book and colonized by whatever mushrooms you're growing, then sandwich them inbetween the phone book pages.

Not very well, but they will fruit. Oyster and reishi seem to do better on paper than shiitake. I'm trying a dozen or so species now to see what works and what doesn't. RR

This is awesome, I just got a phone book last week.
I was wondering if it's feasible to pasteurize the phone book in the oven?
Also what kind of results did you have with reishi on paper?
Ps. Hello Shroomery

I don't remember for sure, but for this kind of fast growing mushroom, sterilization is not mandatory. You can pasteurize in the oven, same as cooking a chicken with Cookie bag. I think I did not get good results in Reishi on paper.

Reishi is the only species I've ever had much luck with on cardboard/paper. Oysters for instance work but I got pretty crappy yields. Never tried hericium but I wouldn't think paper would be the best substrate to use.

I do believe that phone books with soy based ink are less harmful than petrochemical ones. But what about the heavy metals in the pigments?
Fungi are rich in enzymes to break down petrochemical residues. But also they have lots of absorbents that take up heavy metals. So I stay critical...
I wouldn't worry too much though about Psilocybe, as you are only consuming a few grams. But what about 200g a day of fresh gourmet mushrooms?
