They always have some single jars in my local Home Bargain. Usually have at least 10 or so on the shelf of 1L and .5L.
I'm curious about those lucky vitamin jars guys. are they shipped from the uk? Is there customs or vat or anything due on them at all?
IF they really are that cheap I'll get them added to the top

I think lucky vitamin are US based. If there is duty and vat to pay it shouldn't be any more than a fiver.
Does anyone know postage cost??

They are based in America.
If you were to buy 12 jars it would cost you £10.61 with £8 shipping. No duties would be payable cos it's not over £20.
Total Cost £18.60 ish £1.55 per 90mm mouth quart jar
If you were to buy 24 jars it would cost you £21.22 with £8 shipping. You would very likely have to pay duties cos it's over £20. I found it a lot easier to pay £14 ish quid for the shipping option with all taxes/duties included so I didn't get any nasty surprises or get any delays.
Total Cost £35.22 ish £1.46 per 90mm mouth quart jar

It's the reason I couldn't buy any yank SFDs and had to pay 35!! quid for 12 UK ones, the price/unit on the yank ones is very fair but then the shipping and import tax takes the piss

I think you can look for Zippo lighter fluid (for refilling a Zippo lighter). Not 100% sure though..

Cheers, how clean was the swan stuff? Was it just a cost efficiency thing?
Those 35 quid SFDs turned up, they look very thin compared to the thicker american SFDs I have, but these ones feel more plastic-y. The discs actually smell like cubensis mycelium oddly enough and considering a slip of paper was included going on about microscope samples and syringes, maybe the dude had been up to mischief just before packing em?

this page has the limit at £15, there is no duty below £130 https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty
however it is unlikely you would be done for £15 (VAT would be £3 on most items, not really worth collecting with admin involved, it could be a value dating back years). It is not clear if that £15 includes the postage, it does say VAT will be charged on VAT but I cannot tell if it is included in the valuation.
https://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/pay-a-fee
Quote:
2. HM Revenue and Customs have applied a customs charge. The charge will be at least £8.01 and will include an £8 handling fee,
This suggests (someone may correct me) if it goes through normal USPS post (not UPS!) from the US then it will be handled by royal mail and they will not bother collecting VAT of less than £8.01. At the current UK VAT rate of 20% (on most items like jars) this means the effective limit is really anything over £40.05, and that valuation likely would include shipping. If your item is £40, VAT is £8 and so will not be collected. If the entire cost including post is £41 then VAT is £8.20 and an additional £8 on top for admin fees.
This is the royal mail's info. Couriers will have their own their own admin fees. It is not clear to me if couriers have to stick to this collection of £8.01.
Can anybody say if they have been charged VAT of less than this £8.01 limit? and can people say what admin fees the main couriers charge?
I am in Ireland, our version of royal mail is "an post", they have admin fees of 7euro, and customs do not collect under 6 euro (this is set out by customs, not "an post". The VAT here is 23% so the limit is really approx 26euro (the official limit is 22euro but would vary depending on the current VAT rate). Lots of stuff slips through "an post" uncharged it is is just a little over that limit. However the couriers are bastards and will try their very best to charge you for VAT, since it then means they can charge their admin fees, which I think have an upper limit of 15 or 18euro -so it is in their interest to do it.
A very sneaky tactic the couriers use is that if "free shipping" is shown on invoices, often legitimate, they will apply their own estimation of the postage cost, which in Ireland is often about 85euro, and they charge 23% VAT on that. If there is no invoice/papers then they will jump at the chance to do this. This is crazy since everybody knows "free shipping" is bullshit and that the price is included in the cost price of the item. So if couriers do have to stick to this £8.01 limit and you get a package which costed £40, but they did not declare the postage or legitimately said the postage was "free" and valued at £0.00 on the invoice then the fuckers can try and add on a shipping value, which takes it over the (apparent) £40.05 limit. Not only does this allow them to charge you their high administration fee, but you can be paying well over the odds for the VAT on the ridiculously high postage fee they can estimate. You can argue the case but I know here it is difficult and drawn out, some of the courier fuckers even try to refund you with a credit note for their own shady as fuck company.
In theory if you got say 10 petri dishes sent to you which costed £3.50 including delivery, they could say the item is worth £3.50 and postage estimated at £80 -this is not that far fetched either.
I do not know if this stuff happens in the UK much, but other forums should report if it does. Over here they can deliver the items, and then send you a bill for the fees weeks later, if you refuse to pay expect solicitors letters.

I got a shirt last week from the states. It was 24 quid, and 8 shipping. Then customers charged 11.57 . Lame. Let us know if when they show of Mrmaz what they ended up costing.
Went into my local home bargain today and no mason jars. Just drinking jars
Luckily I have 2 cases of 1l and 1 case of 500ml so between that and bags i should be fine for a while.
Just bought some injection ports. Need to make a stir plate.

On another note what do people here do with spent/contamed substrates? Is a compost bin any good?
Not growing ATM and one of the things I miss most is being able to break up and dump spent / contamed subs in the compost bin - that stuff is absolute dynamite for your compost, especially if it has a healthy trich problem!!!
