Online jiu jitsu?

What the fuck man?! So you can get a blue belt on the internet without sparring now? Does anyone but me care about this? As of right now, even a blue belt is pretty badass and takes a couple years of HARD work to get. This online shit is going to water down the sport I love and make it less respected like karate or some shit.
Are the gracies really just trying to spread the art or are they just trying to get paid? I think you should be able fuck up almost anyone if youre a blue belt. That wont be the case for long if this online shit takes off

Those two boys want that $$$ and to bang Hollywood hookers. IMO of course.
Their boy Brian Ortega does pretty well so they must be decent enough teachers.

They are some of the best to ever do it for sure. If everyone had their mindset there would be no problem but thats not the case. There are two brand new plain white belts running a "gracie garage" out of their homes in my town. Ive met one of them and he thinks very highly of himself. If i had met him first instead of going to a legit school i would have written jiu jitsu off and never gotten to where i am today.
The idea is that people can get together and get free training with no ego involved. Sounds great in theory but getting your ass beat by small people who are just going 30% is the thing that makes you ego free in the first place. NOW i can learn from watching videos because ive developed movement and pressure over the years but i just dont believe an online student will ever be able to compare to someone of the same rank trained in person.

I feel like those online courses are really only for the random dude out in the middle of literally fucking no where. Where the closest school is 10+ hours away and there's no one to roll with. If you live in even a small town there's really no reason for them. Tons of gyms around these days.
As for watering down the sport. I could see it watering down the general population of people who do jiu-jitsu but the sport itself will always be competitive.
Who knows though, stranger things have happened, imagine an online student winning a world title in any belt?
Last thing, I think it's pretty neat that they are documenting and putting on video all the moves and philosophies and movements and everything. For prosperity and all. And just think how much the art has changed over the last few decades, we will be able to accurately see how much it changes in the next few decades.
Some thousands of years now these Gracie videos will be like some ancient martial arts text.

Im not crazy about online belts but theyre trying to scare up new business, most people drop out at the white level.
As a blue belt myself I dont think I should be able to mess up anyone until purple, just my opinion, I feel confident in self defense but blue is still pretty low on the pole.

There are good things about it for sure. I just dont like that i put in so much work getting my blue belt and people can get one with no rolling now. Some kind of martial arts stolen valor or something lol. Perhaps its just my own ego showing itsself, i guess i shouldnt care as long as im getting what i need out of it.
I feel bad for people who love jiu jitsu but have never gotten to feel what its like rolling with black belts.

Master Helio wore a blue belt most of the time, its for show mostly, traditionally you wore a white belt always and after a decade it turned dark brown, five years later it was a black rag and you were fully skilled.

I do jiu jitsu. I dont care about this at all. My game/life isnt affected in the slightest by how other people learn.

"McDojos" that hand out belts in exchange for fees have been around a long time. Where have you been OP?

Different schools have different standards for what qualifies as a blue belt, and I've heard with them its only a basic understanding of fundamentals and many people get their blue's within 6 months. If you go by that standard its not that much of an outrage to get one online if you fulfill the criteria, but personally I think that standard is BS.

One and a half to three years is pretty standard everywhere.

Why do you care about belt colors? The tradition that belt colors are rooted in is fleecing occidentals who wouldn't stay with their training unless they were continuously being handed merit badges.
But yeah. Martial arts is totally about learning how to beat the crap out of people. Nothing better than a room full of dudes who really just want to prove that they can break somebody's arm in a controlled environment.
