Do you agree with Trump's new Afghan strategy?
    #24571266 - 08/22/17 10:29 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Here's the speech:

Personally, I heard a lot of things that went "finally!" in my head.\

It's not the best ever though, cause we all know the best ever will never happen in the middle east, but I say, better than it was.

Thoughts?

It's going to escalate the situation there, many young Americans will die. It's going to accomplish little to nothing.
Funniest part is how Trump was calling everyone but himself a warmonger during his campaign,
and now he is doing this along with his childish nuclear war threats with Korea.

I'd love to know the real reason he's sending more troops, I'm sure it will be revealed shortly.
They wouldn't be sending more troops to Afghan if there wasn't some way to profit 'bigly' from it.

Yeah, they are buried in and fortified more than they ever have been, except now they are extremely familiar with American tactics and strategies, and they are not stupid.
It's not going to be pretty, nothing good will come of this.

The previous 10+ years kind of disproves that, then before that a further 25+ years also disproved that, and before that in the early 1800's again that is kind of disproved. You can't always win a war, maybe conventional warfare, but they do not fight like a conventional army. And we do, thus you'll never defeat that country or rule it without constant conflict until you exit it. The best thing that should happen to that country is for it to be left to its own devices.

Nah, it still remains true.
"how far you're willing to go" does not include the scope of how far you can legally go.

But your basing that little snippet of wisdom on unrealistic facts, that we have to fight to a standard and a rule set that they will never have to follow.

Saying we just have to go a step further is irrelevant, because we will never fight like them. It's what makes us civilized to a degree and humane warfare, they just lack that concept and have no boundaries.

The whole thing is so fundamentally stupid. The minute we leave, everything will revert to the way it was. Russia, Iran and Pakistan will then be able to exercise their influence, and it will be as if we were never there. In order for our strategy to work, we have to remain there forever.

It's idiotic.

If we would form conventional lines of warfare and systematically wipeout geographical areas....we would win. Thats war. Its disgusting and many inncoent people die. Thats why its called war. What we have in Afghanistan is not a war. It should be ended; whatever you call it.

"$ reason to do so"

I agree, it's benefiting some people, it's certainly not for moral reasons.

Yeah I doubt morality was ever a determining factor in any of the wars in the 50+ years.
American blood for American dollars is always a good easy trade for the rich.

I think you've entirely misinterpreted what I am saying.
I was being facetious.

If you genuinely intend to solve an insurgency with absolute disregard for morality or law, you can go about that with genocide, nuclear weapons, relocation, sanitizing the religion and culture, you know, classic Rome (without the nukes).

But be careful referring to western war as 'civilized' you'll get plenty of chastising.

We couldnt do it with 100k troops. 12k isnt gonna suddenly do it.

Especially when the Taliban has retaken much of their former territory.

Longest war in US history.

Probably not.
But I don't think I said it can be won with 12k troops? as explained above.

The best tactic we've found for insurgency thus far isn't large scale operations but small scale raids designed to take out leadership.
but you're right, it's unlikely 12,000 troops will make much of a difference, but afaik we're not privy to the plan.

Part of the plan was/is to let Erik Prince's mercenaries do all the dirty work.

I sincerely hope thats not the case. We have fucked up enough things by going into Afghanistan, we could do with expanding corporate armies.
