First real try on the Gourmet's

Hi there!
This will be my first real tryout on growing gourmet shrooms. I say real because I tried 2 times before with some different oysters that did fairly well for a first time, I think.
I had a hard time finding hardwood for the woodlovers, but then I suddenly found beech-chips! Yay
This time I will try and see of I can grow shiitake and king oysters on the beech and pearl oysters on straw.
From what I have understood, not supplementing the wood makes it possible to grow shrooms with only pasturising..
Please correct me on this if I am wrong..!
I only have a small pressure cooker, so sterilizing is hard for me.. And finding a larger PC in my area is quite difficult.
Here is how the beech chips look: (cant put in pic so here is a link to photobucket) http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj179/newgrower/IMG_4821_zpsmlmwxc1w.jpg
They are uniform and quite clean.
I am still in the learning process and will probably do alot of things wrong.. But I hope in time I will be able to have a little setup going with shrooms to eat and maybe sell some as well..
Pics will follow when I start on sunday..
Thanks

Hello there! Welcome to The Shroomery! There is a literal ton of information hidden within these boards, so be sure to aquaint yourself with the Search Function. Check the "Trusted Cultivators" box so you know you are getting good info (you can also search by name if you find one of the many brilliant mycologists here sans the tag) and be sure to pay attention to the date as the science on Cultivation is constantly advancing and what was law 10 years ago could be bunk now.
If you are going to grow oysters you can use pine Pellets with no loss in yeild according to my Side by Side. With Shiitake you will see a substantial decrease in yeild but will still provide you with a fair amount of fruits, but those beech chips should work fairly well- just spawn a little heavy to help bridge the gaps between the chips. And yes be sure to pasteurize- no need to sterilize- though just FYI according to the same side by side as above if you supplement with 2 cups of wheat bran and sterilize you will just about triple your yeild.

No. PCing is sterilizing. To Pasteurize you want temps between 140 and 170F for 45 minutes.
Glad you're here mate! Please keep us updated with your progress!

Thanks guys!
I have a 30 litre beer brewing system that I can use to pasteurize. Can keep temps pretty accurate..
I was also thinking of trying to do a little experimentation with some grain to grain to increase the amount of spawn.
I only have 1kg of each kind so there is not a huge load to play with..
Thanks, @travelagency I have been following your side by side thread with the pine sawdust..
What ratio spawn to wood chips would you recommend?
Will start with some tomorrow afternoon when I get back home
Peace

I usually do 1 6lbs grainspawn bag to 8 sawdust bags- but with wood chips I'd up it to 6 or maybe even 4.

Alright so I spend most of yesterday pasteurizing woodchips and straw.. Takes forever to cool down..
Not sure if my spawn is good for using to inoculate more spawn, but I hope so.
Pasteurized and added spawn.. Then closed the bags and put them at around 23C..
Used 2kg of woodchips and 200g of spawn.. Looked like this:
This is how the bought spawn looked:
Is this kind good for making more spawn..? I hope so.. haha
The bags:
What do you guys think?
I fucking hope this works..

you can make more spawn with sawdust but the sawdust pictured is no longer sterile since you took it out. I would use one bag to make 10 more or so but I suggest fruiting asap. who knows how old that spawn could be.

Hi again! Just wanted to let you know I am still in progress of figuring things out. Tossed 2 bags the other day, they had germs, but some of the others seem to get some mycelium running. But is going slow..
Will post some pics later today..
Also I have received some petridishes and waiting for some agar to make some plates..
Now I just needs some fungus I was thinking of getting some oyster to start with..

Sorry for not updating.. I suck at that.. some of the bags have made a good colonization. I was not sure when to cut holes in my oyster bags, but today there were 2 fruits coming out of each end.. So now I cut holes, lol..
Also tried building a fruiting chamber.. A very nice member here shared some oyster plates with me so I had to work a bit Thanks, you know who you are!
Here is some pics
And the fruiting oyster bag, now with holes
And here is a Shiitake bag.. Not sure when to take it out the bag, though.. It is starting to brown:
Some of the brown is brown liquid, though..
Will try to be better at updating..
peace

You need around 60 days on shiitake at the minimum. Brown liquid is ok . Bag should turn almost completely brown.

Should it turn brown before I take it out the bag?

Here is a picture of the growth of my try on making spawn from petri dishes.
First is phoenix oyster after 6 days. I think it is too slow compared to others here on the site.. But maybe I have been having them at too low temps..
And here king oyster after 4.. I think it looks good.. Not sure on the progress so far..

I hope to be in a similar situation soon enough, keep up the good work!
Got a spare room and backyard that I hope to fill with a whole variety of things, already got a bunch of natives and rare exotic plants going and look forward to getting some mushrooms in the mix as well.
Pozzie vibes from Australia.
