Water not war
    #2456745 - 03/21/04 10:04 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I?ve been thinking about this quote that echovortex made a couple of days ago. I don?t know where to begin searching for verification of his claim. I?d like to get everyone?s opinion on it.....

Quote:

One thing to keep in mind: the war in Iraq is going to wind up costing at least $200 Billion. The World Bank has estimated that providing clean water to the 1.1 billion people in the world who don?t have access to it would cost $165 billion. That would be a measure that would save tens of thousands of lives and improve the quality of life for over a billion people, at a substantial savings over the Iraq war.

If this is true, then wouldn?t providing clean water for 1 billion people be a better use of the money that we?re spending on "Operation Iraqi Liberation"?

That depends on what you value more, control of the second largest known oil reserves in the world and and the advancement of the U.S. Empire, or human life.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

But saving people isn't as fun or entertaining as blowing them up and still feeling self-righteous about it.

Is it true that it would cost us $165 billion to get clean water to everyone?

That's really my question.

That's irrelevant. As many people here have pointed out, foreign aid is not a legitimate use of taxpayer money, while bombing the hell out of a country to topple a dictator who committed atrocities a decade ago while we were supporting him is totally legitimate.

yeah some of the hypocrisy spouted in this forum is breathtaking.
the government can't initiate force against me in order to feed a starving person in my own city, or to provide clean water to those in need (or even to provide basic services like roads, electricity and sewage!), but it's fine for them to initiate force against me to fund a very expensive war of agression half way around the world.

at least we got one or two libertarians in here who are consistent in their principles. as for the rest, they're fully in rationalization mode at this point..

hey its an election year, just gotta hold out in self denial til november.

Hypocrisy has nothing to do with it.

There's this piece of paper you may have heard of called the Constitution.

--------------------
You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

Well without debating that I'll refer you to the post I responded to.

The military is a constitutional expenditure of funds.

Wait, are you saying foreign aid is unconstitutional?

I'm as opposed to foreign aid as I am to welfare. And I recall no mention of such aid in the constitution.

I would imagine that as long as it's done under a treaty, then it's constitutional.
