What is the best grain to use????
    #24565771 - 08/19/17 05:58 PM (6 years, 5 months ago)

What's up shroomery community! First I'd like to apologize if this has been awnsered a 100 times before I just can't find a straightforward awnser. I want to know what is the best grain to use for g2g. I am currently using the WBS tek and it's working just fine. Only annoying thing is having to strain all the sunflower seeds out and wash it 5-10 times. Also I want to make sure my mycelium is getting the best food it can. What do yall recomend? Thanks for all the help!

Oats

My favorite as well. Cheap, easy to find, and performs incredibly.

Just about any grain works. I even used quinoa once.

Grains I've used with 100% success:

Rice, brown and white
Oats, whole and pearled
Wheat, all colors
Quinoa
Bird seed
Corn
I'm forgetting several..

The best grain to use can be determined with a combination of factors specific to the grower.  Factors may include local availability, price, ease to prep, performance, and accommodation of a wide variety of species.

Currently I prefer rye berries.  Found a local grain farmer that grows them.  They are expensive at $1.60/#, BUT worth it knowing that they don't treat their crop with anything.  A lot of big, commercial organic farmers spray their crop with Bacillus thuringiensis (bacteria), a pesticide.  Good for yields, but bad for mushroom cultivation.  I have yet to come across a species that didn't thrive on rye.

I've tried oats before.  Didn't have a lot of success.  While oats are great grain for spawn, IME they require an experienced hand to overcome the bacterial issues commonly associated.  As I gain more skill and knowledge, I would like to give oats another shot because they are cheap af @ $0.22/#, super easy to prep, and perform well.

Wild bird seed is my next thing to try.  WBS has a great combination of benefits: easy to prep (thanks mushboy), cheap and also a good performer.

Conclusion - Just pick one and try it out.  You might have to try a few before you find one that works best for you.

Treating your rye with bacteria won't matter if you sterilize them. They grow it outside anyway, it's covered in all kinds of contams.

OP, use what's cheap and easily available. It doesn't matter that much as long as you prep it right.

So would it be safe to say that you don't subscribe to the whole bacterial endospore controversy then?  Been researching this and doesn't appear to be a general concensus on the matter.  I've read from experienced cultivators on here that untreated grains have less of an endospore load.  My understanding is that a 2 hour PC cycle @ 15 psi will kill almost everything.  With less endospores starting out, the number of damaged, but surviving endospores will be at a minimum.  The theory sounds logical.

I don't have enough grows under my belt to draw any of my own conclusions yet.  It would be awesome if you could shed a little more light on this.

If you just sterilize long enough (2 hours @ 15 PSI for quart jars is more than enough) then it doesn't matter.

Some bacteria always survive.  The problem is that when you overhydrate your grains those bacteria have a much more ideal environment to thrive and spread in.  Also grains with crevices that have been sprayed with Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT, common especially in organic farming) may require more time.  Opinion + old memories, feel free to correct anything that's wrong.

OP, grains that are easy to break up and have high inoculation points are best.  Millet/WBS is good, grass seed is dope but I could never get that shit to shake and it often went bacterial, so I'd avoid it.

--------------------

I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister.  I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave.  I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent.
Triggered yet?

Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."

No, this does not look right...

Rye is king of the grain substrates.  I like to use small grains such as milo, wheat, WBS, or millet (WBS is a mix of all of the aforementioned grains + sunflower seeds) as/for grain masters, and G2G small grains into larger grains such as oats, and rye, because I like to use the big grains to spawn to the bulk substrate, or case with.  The big grains such as whole oats, and winter rye berries hold more moisture, and are more nutritious than the smaller grains with rye taking both cakes in the departments of water retention, and nutritional content.
