Help with my Liquid Culture

So i know that with an LC you can never for sure say if it is contaminated or not in beforehand. I just wanted your opinions on if my one/two-weekish old LC looks healthy or not. (i've spotted these black spots, which actually were there before i inoculated. to be clear: this is a already sterilised liquid culture i bought on the internet)

The only way to know for sure if an LC is clean is to test it. Put some drops on a few agar plates, and or inoculate a couple test jars of grain. Not sure if a microscope would come in handy for this.

The problem is: I happen to not own a PC. This will probably happen first in about half a year, unless i have luck and find a very cheap one at a thrift shop. So i don't really know how else i could get started with Agar. I have everything i need, just not the PC.

That's a big problem. A PC is a must have unless you're only growing PF style. You can pick up a 23qt Presto for under $100.

I've read something about a "cardboard cloning tek", where you sterilize with a microwave. Could that be an alternative for Agar until i get my PC?

No. Agar is an invaluable tool to this hobby. If your buying lc online, why not by pre-made agar plates. It's still taking a risk and by that time you probably half way to buying a PC.

It is possible to do agar without a pc according to bod.
Quote:
If you don't have a pressure cooker agar media can be sterilized by steam alone, steam your agar bottle like you would a PF jar for no less than 45 minutes. Not having a PC/autoclave is no reason to avoid agar. Although I HIGHLY recommend using a PC for agar. And in general do not suggest doing agar without a PC

I recommend using powdered "lab grade" agar media if you are going to avoid PC use for agar. Homebrew recipes can have sediment and chunks that will be harder to sterilize

Do you have any links for me, so i can get a better understanding of what "lab grade" Agar consists of?

Just look up MEA agar lab grade on google. It just means the powder i so fine it will completely dissolve with no sediment.

Since larger substrates get sterilized for longer, it stands to reason that the same principle would apply for steam sterilizing of agar with sediment without a PC as it would PCing a spawn bag loaded with 6 quarts of grain, such as steam cycling for the full hour, and a half as opposed to 45 minutes.

if you have sediment sure, without sediment liquids are just far easier to achieve sterilization than non liquids.

So i've decided to buy a few pre-made agar plates and use these until i will be able to buy myself a PC. Thanks for all the answers.

Don't want to waste my cultures :/ Or do you think it would be safe to store the LC's in the fridge for a few months?

I use a 16qt presto and its perfect for my needs. It fits 7qt jars and new costs around $73 on Amazon. You can also check your local craigslist ads for a used one for much cheaper
