Imagine a world...

Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that a device has been invented such that anyone who attempts to harm another, through direct or indirect action, has instead an equal action of the same type committed against them.
If you try to shoot someone, the bullet instead hits you.
Would you want to live in such a world? Why or why not?

So if I neg rate somebody I'll receive a neg rating at the same time?

No, not really. The intent has to be to cause another human physical harm.
If, by some strange way, you were intending the neg rate to actually cause the person physical harm, then you would get that harm committed against you.

Basically what I am asking is, would you give up your own freedom to cause another person harm, in order for you to not have any harm committed against you.
Edit: I got this idea from a book, "Childhood's End", by Arthur C. Clarke.

We already live in a world where this happens. The only difference is the reprisal is not always exactly what you dished out and often not immediate. What goes around does indeed come around though. It may take years, it may take a decade, but everybody gets what's coming to them one way or the other. Whether you believe it or not and whether you understand it or not.

Very true! I'm probably the biggest believer in karma...who doesn't believe in karma
However, I am imagining a world where the reaction is immediate and equal in magnitude to the action.

I think people would just get better at other forms of 'violence' than physical. There's a million ways to be a villain or a victim. Physical harm is only one.

I prefer the world like it is. In the world you're describing people would only be nice because they have to be. It would be meaningless.

Take it one step further, then: any harm you attempt to commit against another is instead committed against you.
The basic idea is the same: are you willing to give up the right to action, so that you are safe from having the action taken against you.

Harm is relative in that instance. At that point it's fairly open to interpretation.

How so? Can you give me any examples of a "harm" which is open to interpretation?

Lots of people seem to be hating on Trump in (x) number of ways. In that scenario, with the right mindset you'd have people playing musical chairs with government officials. I just feel like with something as open as that, the punishment would match the interpretation of the individual. Then what if the other person being effected decides they are falsely accused? I'm not sure if it would include other people in the punishment or if it would create a cycle that doesn't end. Eye for an eye and all that.
