Psilocybe subaeruginosa fish tank tek | Australia * 29
    #24524416 - 08/02/17 09:12 AM (6 years, 8 months ago)

This post has been edited to compress the whole thread into 1 single post, mainly showing how I created a verdant moss garden in a fish tank and grew Psilocybe subaeruginosa in the terrarium and fruited it within a year. Three flushes were obtained in the first fruiting season.

The important things to do is to mist frequently and to keep the grow shaded from direct sun. Other than that, this is a low maintenance, no fuss approach to creating something beautiful which you can admire on a daily basis. That you get a supply of fresh subs from late autumn to early spring is a bonus!

You can easily and cheaply replicate what I did, and no sterile technique was used at all... no agar, no grains, no flowhood.

My starting materials: a fish tank; pine cones, needles and bark; Psilocybe subaeruginosa mycelium that I grew using cardboard tek and colonised woodchips from a garden bed; a bag of cheap potting mix.

I added a moss layer of different species that I had collected in parks and reserves.

Myc began to grow over the weeks and months that followed.

Nine months later the first mushrooms appeared but these were not subs but something else. I suspect they were Leratiomyces ceres.

And then the sub babies finally emerged, in late May which is autumn for us folks in the southern hemisphere.

In June this is what I got.

Some serious sidepinning in July.

The view in August.

Below is the original post when I started this thread, which I encourage you to go through if you want to know the specifics as to what I did when. I will happily answer any questions if you message me or if you post in the thread.

----------------

It is only early days yet but can't wait to see the outcome of this.

I started with a fish tank which was a roadside find.

Then a layer of soaked pine bark and pine cones:

Next a layer of pine needles:

A bag of cheap potting mix went in at the same time I added the mycelium-containing woodchips:

Then a bit more potting mix and finally a variety of mosses to grow on top of it all.

I mist several times every day with rain water and in the past few days have noticed mycelium growing next to the glass... one of the benefits of using a fish tank in this tek

I'm hoping I will have success with fruiting next year. During the summer months I may bring the fish tank inside, will make a nice display of greenery in the house. If all else fails at least I'll have a nice terrarium out of this.

Here's an update on the fish tank tek with new pics. There is mycelium growth observable thanks to the glass but I've also noticed that too much moisture in the substrate slows down or stops growth. Will be interesting to see how the mycelium behaves during the summer, I'll bring the tank indoors then and will continue to mist spray with filtered and rain water when available to keep the mosses growing. Currently the fish tank is outside under the verandah.

Ooooooh nice
The moss has taken over.
Curious what motivated the pine needles?

I added a whole lot more moss actually so that the entire tank is filled, there's about 10 species in there at the moment.

I figured that anything/everything pine can't hurt. Subs grow in soil that is heavily dominated by pine needles where subs are found underneath or near pine trees.

In the fish tank the pine needles also help to aerate the substrate and to keep it loose and friable since the mycelium of subs need constant FAE (fresh air exchange).

There's a really fantastic thread on growing subs started by someone who used to be in WA. Lots of good info there including what substrate works best :rasta:

He has some other threads where he experimented with different substrates and techniques
...mostly with success.

Here's a pic from today of my fish tank tek. The mycelium has pretty much colonised the top few inches of substrate and some of the moss seems to have white stuff on it as though the mushrooms has grown over it.

Not easy to take good photos though because of the reflection from the glass.

It's so beautiful! I've heard subs can be difficult to grow.. Did the spawned wood chips come from the wild, or did you cultivate from print etc?

It was a combination of colonised woodchips from council beds and mycelium grown from cardboard tek. Subs aren’t hard to grow but hard to fruit I think, indoor grows supposedly don’t fruit as easily as outdoor beds.

My fish tank tek is meant to be the best of both worlds. I can move the tank indoors during summer to protect from excessive heat and from drying out in which case it becomes a terrarium with different mosses growing in it.

Come autumn I’ll move the tank outdoors which will hopefully encourage fruiting

Having a glass tank is handy as I can observe how the mycelium behaves in different combinations and permutations of light, moisture and temperature! Also, the effect of different species of moss growing above the substrate... at the moment I’m hoping these will act as casing material.

Just noticed that my fish tank tek set up has bore fruit! After months of watchful care and misting/spraying almost every day with rain water that I collect my efforts have paid off.

I can't seem to upload photos at the moment though, I get a message that says "Upload finished. Processing..." and this goes on forever.

Might try again tomorrow...
