Natural Navigation
    #24546157 - 08/11/17 03:45 PM (1 month, 10 days ago)

I remember my dad teaching me this as a kid and have recently started learning more about it out of curiosity and the fact that I'm in the forest a LOT...anyways I thought it may be something that would interest a few people here so here's a link if you'd like to check it out, I already knew a lot of these like using a tree or the moon to point you roughly south, the shadow stick thing and the north star of course but this guy goes into how to read water and whatnot...pretty cool, just be sure you're in the right hemisphere when reading...enjoy

Hi CGT...Your prompt says it can't provide a secure connection.

I am interested in what you're talking about. My father was a Marine corps scout and taught me some of his tricks..some that you mentioned. I'd like to check the site out. Hope you and your family are well!

I'd love to get some tips and tricks on navigating. My only way of navigation in the forest is usually through landmarks and understand general direction based on the steps I've taken.

I took a map and compas with me when I went deep in one of the national forests. The topography can help alot in picking your path and getting your bearings.

I'm really sorry man, I had every intention of looking up another site for you. Life and some pretty heavy stuff got in the way unfortunately and I completely forgot about it. Again I'm very sorry.

One way is to pay attention to the trees, it's best to pick a tree with a lot of exposure like one in a meadow...look at it from every angle, one side should be bigger, kind of like it's stretching out, this is the south side of the tree. If you pay attention to the branches the south facing branches look as if they're reaching while the northern branches tend to stick upwards.

The crescent moon can point you roughly south if you connect the two points then extend them down to the horizon.

You can also put a stick in the ground around midday and mark the shadow in the dirt, draw a line from your shortest point in the dirt and it will give you a north/south line...stick being south.

There are quite a few others but these will get you started
