Help with claviceps paspali identification?
    #24539798 - 08/08/17 07:03 PM (6 years, 9 months ago)

I'm 99 percent sure I have a fuckton of paspali scelrotia in my back yard.

Its on the two strained paspalium grass that almost resemble someone throwing up a peace sign.

It is growing from what looks as the inside of the seed and resembles the round part on popped popcorn.

I see clear hyphae growth around and on what appears to be scelrotia.

My my question is does it have to be black or red colored for it to have alkaloids or germinate or do I have what ive been searching for?

I found some with black growth but it didnt poke out like the popcorn looking growth did.

The black stuff still looks like normal seeds so I'm hoping its not mildew.

But i have seen some that almost resembled microscopic raisins. Any comments on this as well would be much appreciated.

Allow me to take some photos.. Here u go .. My cameras shit but the best look at one is in the seed in the middle of the bag in the middle of the other seeds. The tissue is a off yellow color some still have white fuzzy growth

Im not giving anyone this its going to be strictly personal because of the chemicals that cause seizures are a risk. Only after i alter claviceps purpurea dna to produce alkaloids will I let others have any.. I know that sounds greedy but its the safest way

The sclerotia lay dormant over winter then throw out spores. Once the spores infect grass the sclerotia starts growing where the seed of the plant normally would. The plant sends nutrients to grow sclerotia and not a seed.

Here's a better picture..

The first is from a the university of Georgia plant pathology and the second is mine.

The gall like structures look extremely similar.

I wonder if they will germinate

I was under the impression that paspali formed large sclerotia like purpurea. I was wrong.
