I Like BRF Cakes More Than Grains, Weird or Nah?
    #24515321 - 07/29/17 03:36 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Personally imo currently I find brf cakes to be easier n more my thing instead of grains. Dat might change later on since I'm still sorta jus gettin into all dis but rn I find brf cakes better to me, seems more simple n easier to do. Again das jus my opinion n it's not certain, it very may possibly change in the future. Lemme know what ya think bout dat. Anyone else think the same? Anyone know of simpler teks than the brf?

Nothing wrong with BRF cakes. They're so simple a 4tg grader could grow them, very difficult to mess up.

And if you only want an ounce or two, they're great.

But cakes and bulk is the different between ounces and pounds, and big beautiful fruits. My tubs typically yeild between 6 + 10 ounces on the first flush alone, I've had higher (and lower ).

I currently got 2 brf jars goin rn n they are doin great. I have 3 jars of grain goin (popcorn) still waitin on results, only been a couple days tho. I also have an LC goin, looks like it's startin to show signs of growth. Jus experimentin wit different things, but I'm real fond of the brf rn idky lmao. My intentions wit the brf (if all goes well) crumble em both up n spawnin em to coir in a tray n growin in my sgfc. My grain I'm plannin on spawning to coir as well but in a monotub for EXTRA BULK:crazy2:lmao. Still relatively new to all dis but I'm learnin quickly n gettin the hang of it. Some fun shit fr:grin:

I rarely do brf anymore but there's something beautiful in it's simplicity. I feel closer to my little friends the pf way. I imagine pf being a sweet gardener with a great smile handing me a flower, and bulk feels like a russian mobster overseeing the labor at a smog factory, lol.

I am doing both at this moment but I think I will move to grain mostly and grow brf cakes only to test how isolates grow on them after I have choosen some that grows well on horse manure compost/vermiculite/coco. And maybe to teach some of my friends cultivation of mushrooms because as you said it, it is very simple.

Couple things. Popcorn is the *worst* grain so I suggest you quit using it and switch to Rye, wheat or oats if you can find them, if not Wild birdseed is a very cheap, good grain to use for spawn.

Other thing, forget the LC. There are tons of old, bad Teks that sucker new cultivators in. Truth is spore syringes are not clean enough to inoculate LC and often will contaminate.
LC should only be inoculated with a very clean culture on agar.
Which is another thing, if you are going to work with grains you are going to need to learn agar work, again because spore syringes are not clean enough typically for grain.
BRF cakes are pretty forgiving in that aspect.

If you are going to inoculate grain with spores , only use a *single* drop

These are all traps new cultivators get stuck in. Keep working with BRD while you practice your sterile technique+ SAB work and learn to culture on agar + produce clean grain spawn.

Being able to produce clean spawn is the single most important part of cultivation !

Just p.Amazon spawned with just brown rice to coir/compost that i cased with live moss from out back haha.
It turned out better that i though, its mainly for aesthetics but will definitely be put in testing for outdoor flowerpots cause Sc is a hot dry place

I appreciate all dis info n will definitely be takin it in PAUSE lol:rolleyes: but Im only usin popcorn cuz it was the only thing I had available,n I got it all for free lol, I jus like the simplicity in preparing it especially since I don got a PC n I know you can sterilize other grains without a PC, it ain't as good tho but hey again I'm still jus startin so it's good to expirement wit different things:tongue: I will definitely be switchin to rye berries or WBS eventually but I'm currently runnin low on cash since I done spent most of all of it stockin up on supplies lmfao.

Jus a random question, prolly been asked before. But I was wondering if I could do my brf mixture but put it in a 1 quart jars as if it was a grain, wait for dat to fully colonize n when it's 100, shake it up n crumble it n den let it sit for a day or so to sorta "heal" from the rough seperarion. After, spawn it to bulk.  Would dat work? Are fully colonized brf cakes easy to break up like dat? N my lids are made well so it'd be pretty unlikely for contams to get in when I crumble em. Jus an idea, prolly gon give it a try whether it's good or not cuz hey fuck it:crazy2:lmaoo. But yeah lemme know what ya think.

They won't colonize well in a quart jar and they don't break up like grains do because we let them consolidate before birthing unlike grains which are spawned after 100% visible colonization.

I might try the whole 1 quart brf jars but it might stall out n it'd take forever but I mean if I'm bored n have all the stuff, it's worth a try haha. But rn I'm jus waitin for my current jars to colonize so I can get my first grow goin so I can get my damn spores lol

If you're set on doing that then fill the qt jars up halfway and do an in vitro style grow. Just trying to save you from what will certainly fail

I've been branching out some what and have varying results with both Teks. I like the PF method for its simplicity and the availability to create a contained sterilized substrate without the investment of a pressure cooker. It really comes down to the genetics as far as what your strain is going to do in either substrate. The worst is having a large amount of substrate that is fruiting very patchy or sparse amounts. Id get the prints from new strains grown via  PF and isolate in dish before moving to grain or else you'll not feel as connected to that particular process...(?) in my personal opinion of course.

another question, so imma be using 50/50 coir/verm as my substrate. so the tek says to use the brick, well for my i dont have the compressed coir brick i have jus the regular loose huge bag of it (its the exact same stuff tho so it aint no different) im jus wondering how much of the already loose coir i would need to use to compensate wit the brick of coir?
