I remember hearing that in the year 1985 - or sometime around there - there was an asteroid headed straight for earth but it barely missed hitting us by a very small margin. This asteroid is now orbiting the earth and will make its second pass sometime soon. So I heard....
Seriously, if we did discover that this asteroid was headed stright for us, Im sure we'd build some kind planetary defensive cannon that'd just blow those fuckers away.
Or we might just send a nuke up there, have it malfunction, and destroy the only bridge out of town.

wtf? how can only 60% hit the earth? Like as in it "brushes" the atmosphere and earth, and then continues on its now interupted orbit to whatever means? Hmmmmm.... anyways, there was an asteroid that scientists say came within 26000 miles of the earth a very short time ago..... not sure how that plays into any big picture of humanity being doomed....

If you are referring to Toutatis, it will pass the earth 4 times the distance to the moon. It's very near but i think its trajectory has been defined for this crossing, so i don't believe it will be a problem.

4 time the distance to the moon is pretty far compared to some other near misses we've had.
I think it was 1995 when an asteroid of substantial size flew right between us and the moon. Barely over half the distance to the moon. Now that's close.
