    #24505564 - 07/24/17 08:04 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

So like i know i stream and download a ton of shit that could technically be frowned upon.... What EXACTLY is a vpn and why do i need one?

Also how do i creat my own? what are the benifits of using a hosted vpn vs hosting one myself?

A vpn in an encrypted connection between two computers. When you connect to a vpn service your traffic through your isp is encrypted so they don' t know what websites you are visiting or what you are downloading. Also the website you are visiting doesn't see your real IP address, it sees an IP address provided by the vpn service.

You could make your own vpn with a virtual private server, but it is complicated.

Some popular vpn services are private internet access and nordvpn. They claim to not keep logs of what you do on the internet.

Doesn't doing this slow your computer way down?

Not really. I have had accounts with both of those services and they were pretty fast. They have free trials.

The one I made myself using Amazon Lightsail VPS is slower.

I myself use IPvanish it has a small monthly fee to run but its one of the top rated. I would suggest that one for surfing darknet and torrenting if you wanna start being more secure.

The part of your question I don't think anyone answered, is for privacy while surfing the web or whatever, there is an advantage to not hosting your own. A self-hosted VPN may give your transactions some cover at a public WiFi hotspot, but the traffic is still traced to your IP address, and thus to you. Just the evil guy at Starbucks can no longer see what you're doing. ...which is a good thing, too.

Hosting a VPN yourself is also fairly complicated, and to do it right requires niche cryptographic knowledge. Just spring for the commercial VPN service. I recommend it.

I also recommend using TOR-browser over your VPN, and HTTPS everywhere (a feature enabled by default in said browser).

Good luck.

I have a vps on amazon running openvpn server on a debian 8 image. It wasn't hard to setup and doesn't reveal my ip. I don't know amazon's policy about privacy.
I just did it for the hell of it.

That's a pretty interesting idea. I'd keep in mind, though, that Amazon is in the data business. I'd be shocked if they didn't have extremely capable logging in support of their abuse policies, and I'd be equally shocked if they didn't share if not sell their cyber data.

A lot of very large corporations such as Netflix use amazon web services. I don't think they would approve of being logged.

I think these companies pay a premium to have their traffic logged. And another premium to have their traffic analyzed. It saves them from having to do their own monitoring.

I agree the security of using a homemade vpn is probably less than using a vpn provider.
I just did it for the challenge.

I recently signed up for IPVanish.  I really like it.

I have it on every device.  iPhone, laptop and even my Amazon Fire Stick.

So when I stream movies/shows on Kodi, I just turn on the VPN first on the fire stick and now my ISP can't see what I'm doing and throttle my speeds.
